| Five Glencoe-Silver Lake students earned a trip to the State Science Fair in late March after earning purple ribbons at the SC/SW Regional Science Fair in Mankato over the weekend. | 5 advance to State Science Fair Of the nine Glencoe-Silver Lake senior and junior high students, and one Glencoe parochial student, who went to the 58th annual South Central/Southwest Regional Science Fair in Mankato last weekend, five earned purple ribbons and berths in the State Science Fair set for late March.
The following students earned ribbons and other awards for their projects:
Lisa Broderius, senior, purple ribbon in both paper and project areas and trips to State Science Fair and JSHS; alternate to International Science and Engineering Foundation Award; MICO senior high individual grand project award of $50; Thin Film Technology Corp. project award of $50; Thin Film Technology paper award of $50; senior high independent research paper award; Association For Women Geoscientists Foundation award of shirt, Minnesota Water Resource River Board award of $100; Stockholm Jr. Water Prize award; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminsitration medallion for her project "Saving High Island Lake."
Adam Broderius, 10th grade, purple ribbon for both paper and project areas and trips to the State Science Fair and JSHS; the MICO senior high individual project grand award of $50; Thin Film Technology Corp. project award of $50; Thin Film Techology paper award of $50; and senior high independent research paper for his project "Ethanol Blend Pumps."
Samantha Johnson, seventh grade, purple ribbon and state science fair trip for her project "Can Cats See Color?" She also won the Thin Film Technology Corp. independent research award of $50.
Emily Navratil, eighth grade, purple ribbon and state science fair trip, for project "How Safe Is Your Produce?" She also won the MICO junior high individual project grand award of $50.
Chris Becker, 12th grade, purple ribbon and state science fair trip, also won U.S. Air Force award of backpack, folder and MP3 player for his project "Fighter of the Future?"
Teddi Grego, eighth grade, Minnesota State University Biology award of $50 for her project "The Junk Mail Dilemma: Red Ribbon."
Mercy Rakow, eighth grade, blue ribbon for "Which Is Better For Health: Buffet or Individual Servings."
Alex Brelje, eighth grade at First Lutheran School, blue ribbon and U.S. Army certificate and shirt for "Which Compost Is Best: Liquid or Solid?"
Alexandra Stensvad, eighth grade, blue ribbon and U.S. Army Best of Life Science category for "Does Pollination Affect the Taste of Apples?"
Vince Thomas, ninth grade, blue ribbon for "Freezing Pollution."
The students' adviser is science teacher Roxanne Stensvad.
