By Rich Glennie
Glencoe City Council tabled until its Feb. 1 meeting a decision on whether to do an acoustics study of the former gymnasium/auditorium area of the old Henry Hill building. That area will become the event center segment of the City Center plans.
The council also delayed action on issuing bonds for the City Center project until the first February meeting. The bonds will be sold to Security Bank & Trust.
As to the acoustical study, Mayor Randy Wilson said it is more cost effective to know the acoustics now before a new sound system is purchased. "I feel it is money well spent now that will save us money later."
City Administrator Mark Larson agreed. Currently, the asbestos removal crews are at work, "and asbestos removal is delaying everyone right now." That work is expected to be done in about two weeks.
Larson also said plans are to save the gymnasium floor.
The permanent seating in the auditorium's main floor has been removed, and those seats are currently being stored in the basement lunchroom area.
Council member Dan Perschau, also co-chairman of the City Center fund-raising campaign, said the original plans called for keeping the old auditorium seating, but now the aim is to sell the seats to the public, either locally or electronically. He said the sale could generate additional revenue for the City Center project.
Larson said the lunchroom area in the old school is being eyed as a multi-purpose room in the long-term plans for the facility.
As to selling the auditorium seats, Wilson said the city needs to get an idea of their value before putting them up for sale.
