Esther Sophie Harms, 98, of Glencoe
Funeral services for Esther Sophie Harms, 98, of Glencoe, were held Monday, Nov. 9, from Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg. Officiating was the Rev. Donald Andrix.

Mrs. Harms died on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at Glencoe Regional Health Services long-term care facility.

Organist was Kathy Oelfke. The congregational hymns included "How Great Thou Art," "Jesus Loves Me" and "Abide with Me."

Serving as pallbearers were grandchildren Kevin Harms, Steven Harms, Sondra Wash, Michael Harms, Martin Harms and Suzanne Weniger. Honorary pallbearers were Patricia Harms, Jeanna Carver, Lynda Belgum, Mark Severson, Brian Harms, Erin Matray and Denise Germain. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Esther Sophie Engelke was born April 29, 1911, in Helen Township, McLeod County, to Fred and Minnie (Lustman) Engelke. She was baptized on May 7, 1911, at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg by the Rev. Pfotenhauer and confirmed into the faith on April 5, 1925, by the Rev. Bauman, also at Emanuel. She attended Emanuel Lutheran School in Hamburg.

She was united in marriage with Martin Harms on Oct. 27, 1935, at Emanuel Lutheran Church by the Rev. Bouman. The couple made their home on a farm near Plato until 1988, when she moved to Millie Manor.

The Harms shared 54 years of marriage before Mr. Harms died on Aug. 2, 1990.

Mrs. Harms was a homemaker and assisted her husband on the farm until 1973. In her retirement, she enjoyed working part time as a cook at the Blue Diamond Café in Plato for about three years.

She was a lifetime member of Emanuel Lutheran Church. She took a trip to Seattle, Wash., which she enjoyed immensely and also traveled to Soldotna, Alaska, to see her granddaughter, Jeanna Carver. Mrs. Harms loved sewing, gardening, quilting, embroidery, baking and fishing for sun fish.

In March 2006, she became a resident of the Glencoe Regional Health Services long-term care.

Survivors include her children, Frederick (LuAnn) Harms of Glencoe, Myrtice (Arnold) Severson of Hutchinson, Harlan (Barbara) Harms of Prior Lake, Hillard Harms of Milwaukee, Wis.; grandchildren, Kevin (Lori) Harms, Patricia Harms, Steven (Lori) Harms, Jeanna (Brad) Carver, Sondra (Sam) Wash, Lynda (Steve) Belgum, Mark (Alisha) Severson, Michael (Nicole) Harms, Brian (Joy) Harms, Erin (Blake) Matray, Suzanne (Jeff) Weniger, Denise (Richard) Germain, Martin (Amy) Harms; 21 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-granddaughters; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Fred and Minnie Engelke; husband, Martin Harms; children, Howard and Myra; siblings, Elsie Sprengeler, Malinda Renken, Henry Engelke, Lydia Dammann, Adolf Engelke and Emma Voigt.
