By Diane Robinson
To the Editor:
I write this to all Americans; to those who are involved in politics and to those who are not, if you care about preserving this country you must listen and act now!
There are many who do not realize that the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (H.R. 2454) was passed by the House of Representatives on June 26. It is commonly known as the "Cap and Trade" bill, but I prefer to call it the "Cap and Tax" bill, because that's what it is, a massive energy tax in disguise.
This bill was passed in response to the supposed man-made global warming crisis. There are scientists who believe that carbon dioxide is causing the earth's temperature to rise.
Recently a suppressed EPA report has been brought to light which refutes this idea. CO2 is rising but the earth's temperatures are cooling and are projected to do so until 2030. Even if we reduce carbon emissions as stated in the Cap and Trade bill it would cool the earth less than one degree, the environmental gain does not justify the economic pain it would cause our country!
What is the economic pain? According to the Heritage Foundation, this bill will kill millions of jobs. It will sharply raise energy prices; electricity 90 percent, gasoline 58 percent, and natural gas 55 percent by 2035. Companies will be forced to outsource manufacturing jobs; free trade will be hurt by this bill. It will cost the American family nearly $3,000 a year in added energy costs. This bill will rewrite the American standard of living.
This bill is a massive power grab by the federal government. If this bill passes through the Senate and becomes law, those legislators who voted for this bill will someday deeply regret their vote as they will realize that they will have given too much power to the executive branch and to dozens of unelected bureaucrats.
I advise you to go to the Heritage Foundation Web site www.heritage.org to learn more about the particulars of this bill.
After making a deal with the bill's co-author, Rep. Henry Waxman, on behalf of the farmers of the 7th District, our congressman, Rep. Collin Peterson unfortunately agreed to vote for HR 2454.
We need to let Rep. Peterson know we are not pleased with this vote. He can be contacted at 202-225-2165. We can still stop the Cap and Tax bill from becoming law by calling Senators Amy Klobuchar (202 224-3244) and Al Franken (202 224-5641) and urging them to vote against this bill.
