The pot's boiling. A 23-year-old Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, allegedly tried to set off explosives that he smuggled under his clothing onto a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.
Luckily the device did not explode in the way it had intended. But the Chrstmas Day attack did bring into focus that this nation's counterrorism network has work to do.
President Obama, from his Hawaiian vacation, issued a strong statement that the United States will use every effort to determine what went wrong with the current system, and if any officials have been less than diligent in their duties to see that they are no longer in a position to do so again.
He is to be encouraged and supported in his efforts. The security of this nation is every citizen's concern, and we must close ranks behind an investigation into attempting to see security cannot be breached again.
Quite a bit has been written and said about "water boarding" as a means of gathering information from enemy combatants. This clown, Umar, has information which might well aid in preventing such security lapses.
Perhaps we should not subject him to tough interrogation, such as has occurred in the past. Maybe, instead, we should turn him over to loyal Americans, who are also Muslim - such as the congressman from Minnesota - and let them gather needed information.
These American citizens, just like you and me, want to be assured our nation is protected and defended, and they'll do everything in their power to get information.
Might be well, too, if the Al Qaida-trained radical, who conducted the Fort Hood, Texas, killings was turned over to loyal American Muslisms. No doubt he has a story to tell which could help protect this nation from repeats of that slaughter.
While we're at it, perhaps action should be taken to reverse the decision to charge the alleged bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, in a civilian court, rather than a military tribunal. His is an act of war against this nation. It is asinine to give these terrorists the benefits reserved for American citizens.
The time has come to remove the silk gloves and treat international terrorists for what they are.
Good luck, Mr. President.
