County Board approves Biscay wastewater CUP

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a conditional use permit (CUP) for the city of Biscay Tuesday, even though application was made after construction had started on a $1.7 million wastewater collection and treatment project.
City officials had told the county’s planning commission last week that not obtaining a CUP prior to construction was an oversight.
Commissioner Sheldon Nies said Tuesday that there was plenty of blame that could be shared for that oversight.

Years of conservation efforts honored at dedication

Dr. Virgil Voigt has dedicated countless hours to the restoration of land and the preservation of wildlife.
Those efforts were recognized Saturday afternoon when 112 acres were dedicated as a new Wildlife Management Area, and named the Rich Valley State Wildlife Management Area, Dr. Virgil C. Voigt, DVM, Tract. The property is located in Rich Valley Township, near Biscay.
While Voigt seemed warmed by the honor, he said the restoration of the 112 acres near Biscay was “a little bit about me, but more about the people who come after me.”

Residents, officials frustrated with late CUP application by Biscay

Township officials and rural neighbors to the city of Biscay’s wastewater treatment construction project expressed frustration at a public hearing for a conditional use permit (CUP) application Wednesday morning.
The $1.8 million project, which will construct a combination septic tank and “cluster” mound system to treat septic waste for 29 homes in Biscay, is already under construction.

City of Biscay project will mitigate violations

The city of Biscay’s wastewater collection and treatment system, currently under construction, will help correct ongoing health concerns, that were documented back in 2009.
Peter Miller of Wenck Associates, Inc., told the McLeod County Planning Advisory Commission Wednesday that the city of Biscay was issued a notice of violation in 2009 by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), because most of the sewage generated in the city was “going straight into the Crow River,” which he referred to as a “straight-pipe” violation.

Krienke wins new vehicle at state fair

When April Krienke, 19, of Glencoe, ventured to the Minnesota State Fair in August, she never imagined winning a brand new 2015 Honda Fit.
But one day after the fair ended, she received a phone call with the news and immediately called her parents, grandparents and friends to share her excitement.
“Nothing like this has ever happened to me. I couldn’t believe it. When they called, I was like ‘Are you serious?’ Then I called Mom, Dad, my grandma. I made it a world announcement,” Krienke said.
