Whitesidewalls put on great show

To the Editor:
I hate to break this to you kids, but your folks and grandparents actually had lives before you were born.
Thanks to the GSL Panther Association on Sunday afternoon, all us gray-hairs (or no-hairs) got a chance to relive some of our youth to the doo-wop music of the Whitesidewalls. What a thrill!

Heat turned up (way up) at Helen Baker School

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board learned heating problems have arisen at Helen Baker Elementary School and scheduled a work session on Monday, Nov. 24, to further discuss the issues and how to resolve them.
“Last week, Brady (Flaherty, facilities manager), Michelle (Sander, business manager), and Jamie (Alsleben, board member) and I met in an emergency meeting to discuss the heating problems at Helen Baker. Some of the classrooms are at 98 degrees, 99 degrees, and cannot be adjusted,” Board Member Jason Lindeman said.

County will likely use reserves for jail project excess

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners indicated Thursday morning that it will not cut anything from its jail expansion and courthouse security project.
The County Board had heard at its Nov. 4 meeting that costs were expected to be about $200,000 more than originally anticipated after the final design was drawn by Wold Architects.
The anticipated cost overruns pushed the project to about $7.1 million from the original projected cost of $6.9 million.

5th District vote recount verifies original tallies

A hand recount of the McLeod County District 5 Commissioner ballots Monday afternoon had the same results as the count the night the of the Nov. 4 election — challenger Joe Nagel defeated incumbent Commissioner Jon Christensen by a 34-vote margin.
The recount was requested by Christensen, who also had to pay the cost of the recount, estimated at about $700.
According to the recount, Nagel had 1,209 votes, Christensen had 1,175 votes, and there were 144 write-ins.

Glencoe City Council approves insulation bid at brief meeting

During a brief 20-minute meeting Monday night, the Glencoe City Council approved a bid of $7,660 from Northern Insulation of Gibbon to spray insulation foam into areas of the Glencoe municipal liquor store building.
City Administrator Mark Larson said the insulation will be sprayed into the basement ceiling to solve a moisture problem.
The funding will come from the city’s liquor store fund, which currently has about $200,000.

Veterans Day message: ‘They have all served so we can have freedoms’

When Dave Meyer joined the U.S. Army as a senior in high school, he did it for a lot of reasons — a chance to pay for college, to see the world, and to carry on a family tradition.
“But at some point, serving in the military took on a whole new meaning,” Meyer told the audience at the Glencoe-Silver Lake Veterans Day program Nov. 11. “I don’t know why or what triggered it, but I started standing a little taller and more at attention. And I started taking a longer and more respectful look at veterans.”
