Chamber honors volunteers at luncheon

The Glencoe Area Chamber of Commerce honored two volunteers and elected three new board members at its annual meeting and luncheon Thursday, Nov. 20.
Kelly Rach, this year’s Chamber vice president and next year’s president, received the Chamber’s Community Volunteer Award, primarily for her church work. She also is very active in the Chamber, including serving on the Board of Directors and with the Ambassadors and event organizer committee.
Rach is a financial advisor with Russ Runck & Associates.

County Planning Commission tables meat processing CUP

The McLeod County Planning Advisory Commission is inviting a representative from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture to its next meeting.
The commission is hoping to get greater input on a conditional use permit (CUP) application from Mohamed Gaabane, who wants to raise and butcher goats as a home occupation on a farm site in Hale Township, north of Silver Lake in the area of Ideal Avenue and 225th Street.
The commission considered the application at a public hearing on Wednesday, Nov. 19.

New ECFE director, educator finds position a good fit for her

Alicia Beste, 38, is the new director and parent educator in the Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Early Childhood Family Education program, replacing Jan Mackenthun, previous ECFE director, and Mary Jo Schimelpfenig, previous parent educator, who both retired last June.
“For the last eight years, I’ve stayed at home, caring for my four children, and working part time at the library. I’ve come to ECFE events before with my children, so when the opportunity presented itself, I couldn’t pass it up,” Beste said.

SL Council approves to vacate alley on 4-1 vote

The Silver Lake City Council finally made a decision Monday night to vacate the alley located between Nome and Oliver avenues north of Center Street.
This was the third public hearing since the city received a petition to vacate the alley from Ryan and Kari Kaczmarek in August, who own property adjacent to the alley and who plan to build an addition onto their house.

Posusta finds his niche in flooring business

What was once Kaz’s gas station on Main Street in Silver Lake has now transformed into Brent Posusta’s Custom Installations flooring business, which offers all of the tools to refinish hardwood floors and to install carpeting and vinyl flooring.
Posusta, 35, started his own floor installation company several years ago, and finds his job “very rewarding.”

Irene E. Hajicek, 91, of Hutchinson

Irene Elizabeth Hajicek, 91, of Hutchinson, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long-Term Care in Glencoe.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Nov. 18, at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Hutchinson with the Rev. Jerry Meidl officiating. Bev Wangerin was the organist and Bobbi Ludewig was the song leader. Musical selections included “Be Not Afraid,” “Ave Maria,” “I Am the Bread of Life,” “The Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art.”
