School Board considers earlier first day for 2015

In 2015, the first day of school in the Glencoe-Silver Lake school district will be Tuesday, Sept. 8, due to a later Labor Day holiday, and Superintendent Chris Sonju suggested to the GSL School Board changing the school calendar so that school begins Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Sonju said at workshop session Nov. 24 that when school districts wish to change a school calendar, they must go through a legislative process, as Minnesota state law requires public schools to begin after Labor Day.

School backpack program grows, needs more help

In their fourth year of the backpack program, volunteers with Common Cup Ministry and Hunger-Free McLeod are packing close to 200 backpacks with food for underfed children in the Glencoe-Silver Lake and Hutchinson school districts. And the need continues to increase.

Jessica Grams joins Chronicle news staff

Jessica “Jess” Grams, 35, is the newest member to the team of reporters at The McLeod County Chronicle, and began employment Monday.
She will be covering the Glencoe-Silver Lake school district and the Silver Lake City Council, among other feature stories and events.
She is a 1998 graduate of GSL, and studied theater at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. There, she earned a bachelor of arts degree in theater, and worked as a high school theater teacher for four years after college.
