Accidents continue at Glencoe intersections

Thursday afternoon, a group of law enforcement officials, fire department and emergency medical service personnel, folks from the local funeral home and the county highway department, a public health educator and others, all gathered at Glencoe Regional Health Services to discuss the possibility of a creating a McLeod County “Safe Communities Coalition” to partner with the Southwest Minnesota Towards Zero Deaths (TDZ) program to reduce traffic fatalities in McLeod County.

A few years ago, I bought myself a “smart” phone when I reached a milestone birthday (when you get to a certain age, any birthday is a milestone).
I’m not even sure why I wanted one, except that everyone else in the family had one.

County Board sets workshop to talk HHS building costs

Repairs and energy efficiency improvements at McLeod County’s Health and Human Services (HHS) building on Ford Avenue in Glencoe will take priority at a Sept. 23 County Board workshop.
County Administrator Pat Melvin presented the County Board Tuesday with a list of proposed repairs and improvements, and cost estimates for each.
The highest-priced items on the list were tuck pointing of the bricks and mortar joints at a cost of about $57,000, and replacement windows at a cost between $64,000 and $74,000.

Butternut Grove Farm honored as a Minnesota Century Farm

North of Silver Lake, off of Henry’s Corner, lies Butternut Grove Farm, a beautiful, lush, green pasture of farmland once home to many butternut trees, but is known to most as the Svanda farmstead.
“Nobody knows us as Butternut Grove Farm, but that’s what my grandparents called it,” Ernie Svanda, 84, said of the family farm.
The farm has been in the Svanda family since 1903 and was recognized this year as a Minnesota Century Farm.

County planning commission OKs gravel pit renewal

The McLeod County Planning Advisory Commission is recommending approval of the renewal of a gravel mining conditional use permit following a public hearing Wednesday morning, Aug. 27.
Nobody showed up for the hearing.
Kenneth Polifka is asking the county to renew the permit for a mine he operates on property owned by Gene Streachek in Rich Valley Township.
Polifka said he takes just a small amount of material out of the pit each year.
“We’ve maybe taken out about 700 yards a year the past couple of years,” said Polifka.

City of Glencoe’s health insurance to increase 24%

Health insurance premium increases and high fuel costs are not only hitting individuals, but local governments as well.
The Glencoe City Council Finance Committee and the city’s department heads met to review the 2015 preliminary budget on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
City Administrator Mark Larson reported to the group that he had been notified that the city’s health insurance premiums were set to renew at a 24 percent increase over 2014. A 15 percent increase was budgeted.
