William ‘Billy’ Koester, 70, of Stewart

William “Billy” Frederick Koester, 70, of Stewart, formerly of Glencoe, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at his home.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Sept. 20, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Ronald Mathison officiating.
Rhonda Else and Abby McKimm were the pianists. Special music by Renae McKimm was “Children of the Heavenly Father.” Congregational hymns were “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives.”


Washingtons welcome girl

Antoine and Gloria (Rettig) Washington are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Ryen Avery, on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, at Rust Medical Center in Rio Rancho, N.M. Ryen weighed 7 pounds and was 20 inches in length. She is welcomed by siblings Jacie, 12, and Brycen, 9. Grandparents are Elmer and Amy Rettig of Stewart and Sharon Washington of Florence, Ky. Her great-grandmother is Frances Loncorich of Stewart.

Kayla Katzenmeyer and Cory McDonald of Brownton announce the birth of their son, Cayden Michael McDonald, on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Cayden weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces, and was 191⁄2 inches long. His older sibling is Kiley McDonald. Grandparents are Bruce and Amy Muetzel and Kerry Katzenmeyer, all of Brownton, and Terry and Shelley McDonald of Hutchinson.

Brittany Giovanna Cardenas and Jesus Manuel Pargas  of Glencoe announce the birth of their son, Damian Izeah Pargas, on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Damian weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 191⁄2 inches long. He is welcomed home by older brother Jesus Manuel Pargas, Jr. Grandparents are Perla Flores of Glencoe, and Rodolfo Cardenas, Elva Martinez and Enrique Pargas, all of Eagle Pass, Texas.

Olga Yanet Barrera and Jose Medrano Jr. of Glencoe announce the birth of their son, Misael Nicolas Medrano, on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Misael weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces. He is welcomed home by siblings Tanya, Joceleen, Evelen and Celia. Grandparents are Maria Medrano and Jose Medrano Sr., both of Glencoe, and Olga Barrera and Isidro Barrera, both of Arlington.

Dolores Ramirez Juarez and Salvador Juarez Medina of Glencoe announce the birth of their son, Salvador Antony Juarez-Ramirez, on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Salvador weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces, and was 191⁄2 inches in length. He is welcomed home by sisters Yocelin and Lindsey. Grandparents are Carolina and Adan Ramirez of Glencoe and Maria Ines Medina and Jacinto Juarez, both of Lester Prairie.

There are signs the economy is improving

One only needs to scan the “B” section of The Chronicle to see signs that the five- to seven-year long “great recession” is easing.
For far too long, the legal notice section of The Chronicle was columns upon columns, and pages upon pages, of notices of mortgage foreclosures that came in the wake of the crash of the housing market.
And for far too long, there was a noticeable dearth of “help wanted” ads in the classified section.

“You loose? Ready to go?” my brother asked me.
“Yeah, sure,” I said, not even bothering to look up.
I was leaning against the wall of the picnic shelter in the city of Pine Island (which I call my hometown) park, staring at my phone, trying to figure out if I could play a triple word score in Words With Friends.
My brother, his daughter and I were waiting for the start of our first duathlon, which we were competing in as a team.

There’s nothing better on an autumn Sunday afternoon than the sound of whistles blowing, face-painted fans cheering, grumpy-looking coaches arguing and NFL broadcasters analyzing blitzes and quarterback sacks.
Yes, football is here!
Never in a million years did I think I would be excited for NFL Sundays (and Thursdays and Mondays), but our recent football picks competition at work has me surfing the web for expert opinions on teams, players’ stats and playoff predictions.

Shopping? I’m just my wife’s mule

“I’m just the mule,” I told the fellow as our eyes met in the clothing store aisle. “I’m just along to carry things.”
He nodded in agreement as we commiserated in the aisle while the our wives dove deeper into the clothing racks looking for that exact thing they wanted.
My fellow mule also nodded in agreement that we could have been in and out of there in half the time. Men are buyers, not shoppers. My wife had to explain the difference awhile back. Apparently, shopping is a pleasurable experience when in the right frame of mind.
