County Board to consider 2% levy increase for 2015

The McLeod County Board will consider a 2 percent levy increase for 2015 after a workshop session Tuesday morning.
The item will be on the County Board’s regular meeting agenda Tuesday, Sept. 30.
The County Board on Tuesday looked at the potential impact of tax increases of 0 percent to 4 percent at the workshop, and the impact of the tax increases on different types of property.
County Auditor-Treasurer Cindy Schultz strongly urged the Board to consider putting any additional revenue generated by a levy increase into a reserve fund.

GSL bus leaves road, enters ditch

A Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) school bus ran off a road, but was able to drive through and back onto another road in a mishap on Wednesday afternoon.
GSL Superintendent Chris Sonju said the accident occurred during an afternoon route between Lakeside in Silver Lake and Glencoe.
Sonju said the bus was heading south on County Road 2, when a note from a student started to blow around from an open window.
“It apparently blew into his (the driver’s) face and he reached for it,” said Sonju. The wheels of the bus went onto the shoulder of the road.

Glencoe buys leaf vac; curb service to begin

The calendar says it is offically fall. The leaves are beginning to turn beautiful fall colors. But all too soon, they will begin to fall and then the raking begins.
For residents in the city of Glencoe, the process will be different this year.
The city has purchased a leaf vacuum and will be vacuuming the leaves in the street.
Residents will now be able to rake leaves into the street, along the curb in the gutter line. The city will vacuum the leaves once a week.

County hires consultant for new compensation study

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners will move foward with a compensation and classification study at a cost not to exceed $28,000.
The County Board voted to proceed at its Sept. 16 meeting.
 The study will evaluate current county job descriptions and the compensation attached to each.
The County Board received three proposals, from Fox Lawson & Associates of St. Paul; Springsted, Inc., also of St. Paul; and Keystone Compensation Group of Minneapolis.

Glencoe’s founders were instrumental in shaping Minnesota

executive director of the McLeod County Historical Museum, felt like she was “preaching to the choir” as she gave a talk to the Glencoe Historic Preservation Society on Glencoe’s early history.
Pickell-Stangel was the guest speaker at the society’s annual meeting Sept. 17, peppering her talk with little-known facts about Glencoe’s early founders.
The people most instrumental in forming Glencoe — Martin McLeod and Col. John Stevens — also were instrumental in forming the state of Minnesota, said Pickell-Stangel.

William ‘Billy’ Koester, 70, of Stewart

William “Billy” Koester, 70, of Stewart and formerly of Glencoe, died Monday, Sept. 15, at his home
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m., at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe, with interment in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., one hour prior to the service at the church.
