Carothers joins Chronicle staff as new sports editor

Tom Carothers is The Chronicle’s new sports editor as of Monday, Jan. 12.
A Richfield resident, Carothers comes to the Chronicle with several years of experience covering both high school and community sports. He covered Twin Cities metro sports over multiple seasons for both the Sun Newspaper chain and online for Patch. Sandwiched in-between those stints, he worked for six years as the sports editor for the Woodbury Bulletin.

Panthers defeat Hutch in overtime

It was an exciting start to the new year for the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team as the Panthers began 2015 with a 62-56 overtime victory at rival Hutchinson on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
“Hutchinson is a good team and we knew that,” coach Robb DeCorsey said. “We knew it was going to be a battle and it was. We made enough plays to come out on top.”

Grapplers seize second at Minnetonka

It was a week with a little bit of everything for the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team.
The Panthers competed in a Wright County Conference dual meet with New London-Spicer on Tuesday, Jan. 6 that featured only seven matches due to illness and injuries in the GSL/LP lineup.

Panthers dominate Sibley East

The Glencoe Silver-Lake girls’ basketball team continued to find success against Section 2AA North rivals last week, besting Sibley East 55-41 at home on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
The victory, which preceded a weeklong break, gave the Panthers a 4-1 mark in contests against prospective section tournament rivals.
“This game was by far the most active we have been on defense,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said. “It felt like we tipped over half [of Sibley East’s] passes. [Guard Maddy Kalenberg] got all the girls playing sound defense.”

Jacob Ellis Reno, 22, of Hutchinson

Jacob Ellis Reno, 22, of Hutchinson, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at his home.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Jan. 10, at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Hutchinson with the Rev. Jerry Meidl officiating. Bev Wangerin was the organist and Bobbi Ludewig was the song leader. Musical selections were “Amazing Grace,” “On Eagle’s Wings,” “Here I Am, Lord” and “I Am the Bread of Life.”
Pallbearers were Matt Ludowese, Addison Juhl, Brent Neubauer, Tyler Doering, Mike Trettin and Jay Reading.

Loren L. Landkammer, 71, of Glencoe

Loren Lee Landkammer, 71, of Glencoe, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, at University of Minnesota Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 10, at Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe with the Rev. Paul Schumacher officiating. Lon Roach was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Here I Am, Lord,” “How Great Thou Art” and “Prayer of St. Francis.”

Elroy Frauendienst, 79, of Gaylord

Elroy Frauendienst, 79, of Gaylord, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, at Oak Terrace Health Care Center in Gaylord.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 10, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mountville, Dryden Township, Sibley County.

Walter Carl Alsleben, 94, of Winthrop

Walter Carl Alsleben, 94, of Winthrop, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, at The Lodge in Winthrop.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 13, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Ronald Mathison officiating. Paul Otte was the organist, and soloist Justin Rierson sang “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.” Congregational hymns were “Abide With Me,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “My Faith Looks Up to Thee.”

Mavis Huepenbecker, 81, of Glencoe

Mavis Huepenbecker, 81, of Glencoe, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at the St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 10, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Plato with the Rev. Brian Brosz officiating.
Serving as urn bearers were her grandchildren, Jerad, Joslin, Jalissa, Cole, Mandy and Grace, and honorary urn bearers were her great-grandchildren, Kade, William, Eli, Brooke, Cora, Pierce, Kinsley and Brayden.
Interment was in the church cemetery.

Jimmie Gene Huitt, 77, of Glencoe

Jimmie Gene Huitt, 77, of Glencoe, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, at his home, with family by his side after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.
