Free tuition does not address rising costs

President Barack Obama recently proposed free tuition for two years of community college for students.
“Today I’m announcing an ambitious new plan to bring down the cost of community college tuition in this country,” President Obama said in Tennessee on Friday, Jan. 9. “I want to bring it down to zero. I want to make it free.”

History of dentistry can be found in me

It’s funny how you can look at the same thing day after day without really noticing it.
I was brushing my teeth the other day, and was trying to squeeze the last gob of toothpaste out of a nearly empty tue when I noticed that the toothpaste was specially formulate for people “with over 50 years of experience.”
Experience in what, I wondered. So I asked the question on Facebook, because that always attracts quality answers. This is what I got: “chewing,” “flapping your gums” and “life.”

Mayor passes over commission’s recommendation

To the Editor:
I want to give a heads up to the citizens of Glencoe.

Secret Trans-Pacific Partnership must be stopped

To the Editor:
Since there seems to be no concern by neither our press nor our political representatives, I feel obligated to write about the prospective “Trans-Pacific Partnership” (TPP)  trade pact with “Fast Track” authority being negotiated in secret by corporate sponsors.

Adequate funding need for transportation

To the Editor:
We are the lucky ones — we get to experience all the seasons.
Spring shows us all the beauty of nature with the sprouting of the leaves on the trees, the grass turning green, perennials spring from the ground to bloom again and rain washes everything clean.
Summer, we can experience heat waves with the best of them, enjoy the lakes and parks, watch the crops grow and enjoy every minute of sun and outdoors.

School district starts review and comment on proposed project

The Jan. 12 Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) School Board planning meeting brought many issues to the table, but none more in-depth than the proposal to close Helen Baker School and relocate kindergarten through second grade to the Lincoln Junior High and GSL High School campus.
To accommodate this expansion a review and comment proposal has been drafted and presented to the School Board, with the intent to pass it on for Department of Education approval and, eventually, put to a community vote on May 12.

Hospice: care for patient, peace of mind for family

Ruth Klukas, 92, was living alone on her farm near Gibbon in 2013, and her family was concerned about her well-being as the effects of aging took their toll.
Klukas’ granddaughter, Laura Donnay of Glencoe, had experience with home health care, and was familiar with the hospice program offered in the past by ConnectCare and now by Allina Home Health. Donnay also used to work with ConnectCare.
“At some point, the doctor suggested hospice care and we made the call,” said Donnay.
