State budget surplus of $1.9 billion predicted

It’s been a long time since the state of Minnesota has had a rosy financial picture. But last week, economic forecasters were anticipating a $1.9 billion surplus for the state.
Within minutes of that announcement, our email inbox was flooded with opinions from a wide variety of groups, all clamoring for a substantial slice of the surplus pie — transportation, education, aid to cities — were just a few of the ideas thrown out to spend the surplus.

Melius family’s mercy changed the direction of his life 18 years ago

By Lonnie Ellis
Washington, D.C.
(formerly of rural Glencoe)
Rural Minnesota lost a vibrant and generous leader when Kim Melius of Winthrop passed away on Nov. 23. Many knew her as a dedicated mother, social worker, and hospice caretaker.
Kim and the Melius family impacted me under very different circumstances. I grieve her death knowing my life would be immensely different if not for the compassionate decision Kim and her family made 18 years ago.

Trails, jail, recycling hashed over at tax hearing

Residents encouraged McLeod County commissioners to rein in costs for its solid waste facility, proposed jail project and trails at the annual tax hearing Tuesday, Dec. 1.
“These things seem to take off on us,” said Jim Bobier of Acoma Township.
Jon Christensen, former county commissioner from the Hutchinson area, agreed.
Christensen cited rising costs to retrofit the solid waste facility to accommodate single-sort recycling from the previous five-sort system.

City Council backs coalition on wastewater

The Glencoe City Council approved a request for fees from the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities in order to create a wastewater legal and regulatory program.
The City Council met Monday night.
The coalition requested about $2,000 from Glencoe. The funds provided by Glencoe would be used solely for this program.
The program will work to challenge the new requirements from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) for water quality. The new mandates will be unfunded and the responsibility of individual cities.
