Winter named Extension Educator of Year by MFB

The Minnesota Farm Bureau (MFB) Foundation recognized and awarded outstanding agricultural professionals during the Minnesota Farm Bureau’s 97th Annual Meeting. Recognition was given during the Friday night Awards Banquet on Nov. 20 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington.
The Extension Educator of the Year award was given to Nathan Winter of Hutchinson. This award recognizes the important role that extension educators play in helping farmers keep up to date on new technology and training future agricultural leaders.

City finance committee reviews water system needs

The Glencoe City Finance and Strategic Planning Committee met Wednesday, Nov. 25 to discuss the budget for 2016.
City Administrator Mark Larson gave an overview of the total budget for 2016. He said the budget will be balanced.
Public Works Director Gary Schreifels provided an overview of the projected needs of the water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant and storm water system.

Ridgewater nursing program receives 2 awards

Ridgewater College’s nursing program recently received two elite statewide awards for its innovative partnerships and “extraordinary education” from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System (MnSCU).

Minnesota Eagle Forum honors Rep. Gruenhagen

Minnesota Eagle Forum announces that state Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen, R-Glencoe, has received the 2015 Minnesota Eagle Forum Award for outstanding leadership in support of traditional marriage, and for his dedication in affirming and advancing pro-life, pro-family efforts.
The award was given by Phyllis Schlafly at the Annual Eagle Forum Council held in St. Louis, Missouri, Sept. 11-13.

Lakeview Ranch activities director honored

When you love what you do and you’re a natural at it, people around you often want to see you recognized for it.
Cindy Henning, Lakeview Ranch activities director and Ridgewater College alumna, has such passion for caring for people with dementia that staff nominations led to her being honored as this year’s Minnesota Activity Director of the Year.

Pulkrabek compiles articles into book

Ron Pulkrabek, who provided the Silver Lake Leader and The McLeod County Chronicle with a series of “Tracing Roots” articles over the past two years, has compiled his articles into a book.
The book is 152 pages long and contains 78 articles and 50 photographs, and is spiralbound with a colorful cover.

Capitol renovation topic of meeting in Hutchinson

Hutchinson has been added as a host for a series of meetings taking place throughout the state to discuss the $300 million renovation of the Minnesota State Capitol.
The Hutchinson meeting will take place Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m., at the McLeod County Historical Society, 380 School Road NW, Hutchinson. This is in addition to meetings already scheduled for Rochester, Minneapolis, Willmar, St. Paul, Mankato and Bemidji.

Driver escapes injury after milk truck rolls

A LeSueur man escaped injury after the milk truck he was driving entered a ditch and rolled on Thursday, Nov. 26.
According to the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office, the accident was reported just before 10 a.m. Travis Shannon, 44, was westbound on Sibley County Road 8, four miles west of LeSueur, in the milk truck and was attempting to pass a vehicle when he lost control, over-corrected, and entered a ditch and rolled the truck. The truck came to rest on its side in the ditch. It had severe damage and was towed from the scene.

Gymnasts looking to build in past successes

The Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnastics team will take part in its first competition of the season this Saturday and are ready to improve on the improvements of the past. 
“We want to surpass the scores we had last year,” coach Kim Hahn said. “If we can stay in the range of scores we had last year or exceed that, I will be happy.”

GSL girls can’t overcome Tigers

It was an occasion that felt like the start of a wonderful new tradition as the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team hosted Hutchinson in a rivalry game to open the season on the night after Thanksgiving.
“It was a really fun atmosphere and I felt it was also a pretty good game,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said.
While the Class AA Panthers had their moments against their well-regarded opponents from Class AAA, it was the Tigers that took away the win by a score of 67-56.
