School Board agenda includes closed session, reorganization

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board will have its first meeting of 2015 Monday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m., in Room 124 of Lincoln Junior High School.

The Board will administer the oath of office to newly elected members, discuss a building project election, and have a closed meeting for a student disciplinary matter that may lead to the expulsion/exclusion of a student, among other agenda items.

Except for the displinary issue, the rest of the meeting is open to the public.

Silver Lake City Council swears in new members

Monday night’s Silver Lake City Council meeting began with the swearing in of new Council Members Ken Merrill and Josh Mason, as well as Mayor Bruce Bebo.
The Council also approved the appointment of Council liaisons to the various department heads, such as public works, city administration, public safety, municipal liquor dispensary, community development and planning commission. This meeting not only introduced the council members, but also gave an overview of each of the liaison’s roles and duties.

Bloodmobile coming to Silver Lake Jan. 14

The Red Cross will have a blood drive at the Silver Lake American Legion on Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Volunteers will be calling donors to set up appointments. Anyone who has not been contacted is asked to call Margaret at 320-327-2249.
Donating blood is one of the simplest things you can do to help save a patient’s life. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.
A donor’s card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification, are needed at check-in.

Named to SDSU dean’s list

Four Glencoe students were named to the South Dakota State University, Brookings, dean’s list for the fall semester. They include Kelly Arnold, enrolled in the college of education and human science; Kelly Beneke, enrolled in the college of pharmacy; and Jenna Haag and Abbie Nistler, both enrolled in the college of agriculture and biological sciences.

Girl born to Spaeth family

Lucas and Jessica Spaeth of Halstad announce the birth of a daughter, Clara Rose, born Dec. 24, 2014. She weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and was 21 inches long. She is welcomed home by big brothers Bailey, Carlos and Cameron. Grandparents are Nancy Ellefson of Glencoe and Bob and Diane Spaeth of Mahnomen. Great-grandparents are Al and Teddy Klobe of Glencoe, Madge and Jeep Ellefson of Omaha, Altha Spaeth of Mahnomen and Vangie and Manley Hillstad of Mahnomen.
 

Daughter born to Dammanns

Paizley Adeline Dammann was born Dec. 22, 2014, to Matt and Mandy Dammann of Glencoe at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Paizley weighed 8 pounds, 9 ounces, and was 211⁄4 inches long. She joins a sister, Jurney. Grandparents are Dick and Dianne Gebhardt and Dan and Mary Jo Dammann, all of Glencoe.
 

Wroge — Evans

Kimberly Kay Graczyk Wroge and Barrie Joel Evans, both of Mankato, were united in marriage Sept. 27, 2014, at the Glencoe City Center by Kelli Clement, a Unitarian Universalist minister.
Parents of the couple are Gene and Connie Graczyk of Glencoe and the late George Evans and Peggy Evans of Mankato.
Marcia Koepp was the maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Andie Evans, Truly Evans and Pauline Schulz.
Jeff Eccles was the best man, and groomsmen were David Ulicni and Griffin Evans. Charla Eccles was the ring bearer.

Isabel (Sommerdorf) Betker, 98, Seattle

Isabel (Sommerdorf) Betker was born in Brownton on Dec. 19, 1915, to Charles and Marietta Sommerdorf. She died Nov. 8, 2014, in Seattle, Wash.
She graduated from St. Cloud State and taught in Minnesota schools until enlisting in the Navy in 1942. She was stationed at Sand Point Naval Air Station in Seattle for three years, achieving the rank of lieutenant. In 1950, she married Chris J. Betker of Hutchinson, and the couple moved to the Green Lake area of Seattle in 1958, where they raised two children.
