Wrestlers capture title in Ogilvie

After missing the 34th-annual Ogilvie Lions Invitational in 2014 due to inclement weather, the GSL/LP wrestlers returned to the friendly confines of Ogilvie High School Jan. 3.
The Panthers dominated the tournament in 2012 and in 2013. The final results for 2015 showed an even greater domination by GSL/LP.

Panthers hold off Chargers 54-45

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ varsity cage team battled back and forth with Mayer Lutheran Monday night, but was able to come away with a 54-45 win at the end of the night.
“In a big section game, it was nice for GSL to walk away with the win,” said Coach Zach Otto-Fisher. This was the Panthers’ third win against section opponents, he said, with one loss so far this season.

Boys win final tilt of tourney

The GSL Panthers boys’ cage squad easily handled Prairie Seeds Academy Tuesday, Dec. 30, winning 87-50 for seventh place in the Tartan Holiday Tournament.
While Coach Robb DeCorsey had expressed frustration with his team’s ball-handling skills in the first two bouts of the tournament, he felt they did better with the ball against Prairie Seeds.
While the Panthers gave up the ball too much in their first two games, they shared well in the final tilt.

New year, new voices: changes on local boards

The Chronicle has been covering a rash of swearing-in ceremonies this week, which comes with a new year in local politics.
At the most local level, two commissioners were sworn in Tuesday morning at the McLeod County Board meeting. Monday night, new Glencoe City Council member Allen Robeck was given the oath of office — not only because he is newly elected, but because the Council needed him for a quorum because of the illness and vacations of others.

Pickleball starts at field house; players are needed

To the Editor:

Wright re-elected County Board chair on split vote

Paul Wright was re-elected as chair of the McLeod County Board of Commissioners on a 3-2 split vote at the organizational meeting Tuesday, Jan. 6.
New member Doug Krueger nominated Ron Shimanski as board chair. Sheldon Nies said he thought Wright should remain as board chair.
The normal practice is to have the vice chair take over as board chair, but Kermit Terlinder was not re-elected. Nies said by keeping Wright as chair it will keep some continuity.
