April 8th

How should we value our institutions of education?

To the Editor:
A few weeks ago, I posted a photo on Facebook of a banner that hangs in Glencoe-Silver Lake High School’s cafeteria. The banner hails “Why Do You Go to GSL??? To Learn the Standards!!!”

GOP’s plan prioritizes roads, bridges

Recently, Republicans released the Road and Bridge Act of 2015, a transportation plan that will invest in our roads and bridges and make sure we’re maintaining and improving the quality of our transportation infrastructure for the next 10 years.
Our plan stands in stark contrast to the plan put forward by Gov. Dayton and the Senate DFL, which proposes a minimum 16-cents per gallon gas tax increase that will grow even larger if gas once again goes above $2.50 per gallon.

Moving the Habitat house clarified

To the Editor:
I write on the behalf of Crow River Habitat for Humanity. My hope is that this letter helps clarify specific details surrounding moving our house into Hutchinson, to our lot at the northeast end of Morningside Drive NE.
We anticipate the move to occur on May 14 during daylight hours. The house is to move down Morningside Drive NE and will require that a stop sign, street sign and two street lights be laid down and set back up. This will be completed by the city of Hutchinson.

First blood drive of 2015 set for April 29

To the Editor:
It’s that time of year:  Spring is springing; grass is greening; birds are nesting;  trees are budding; flowers are poking out of the earth; and the first Glencoe Community Blood Drive of 2015 is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29, at the Glencoe City Center Ballroom from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. The American Red Cross has set our goal at 122 units for this blood drive.

Jail project heads back to architect’s drawing board

After construction bids for the McLeod County Jail expansion project were opened last week, it was learned they were more than $2 million over estimates.
A workshop was conducted after the board of commissioners’s meeting Tuesday, April 7, that included the commissioners, attorney and officials from the law enforcement community.

Mother-daughter reunion

“I don’t think in all my life I’ve cried as many tears as I did yesterday,” Mabel Ehrenberg said Monday morning.
That’s saying something, because all of Mabel’s life encompasses 103 years.
And, fortunately, Mabel’s tears weren’t of sadness, but of joy: on Easter Sunday, Mabel — a resident of Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care — was reunited with her daughter, Diane Sellnow, whom she has not seen for five years.

Maintenance shed to be remodeled into bath house

The Glencoe City Council Monday night awarded a contract to Ryan Voss (RDV Construction) to remodel the former city maintenance shed at Oak Leaf Park into a bath house for the park’s expanded campground.
Voss’ bid was one of two received for the original plan to build a new bath house facility in the park. But those bids came in high, according to Mike Drew, city public works director of parks and streets.

Glencoe to switch to county recycling

McLeod County will take over Glencoe’s recycling program in the first week in May, according to Glencoe City Administrator Mark Larson.
At Monday night’s City Council meeting, Larson asked for the city to “opt out” of its current recycling contract with Waste Management. That contract runs out at the end of the year.
Larson said Waste Management suggested the city opt out because the company “did not want to be in a recycling war” and to eliminate confusion for Glencoe recycling customers.

Gruenhagen: transportation plans dominating 2015 legislative session

Funding for transportation continues to be the hot topic at the capitol, according to state Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen, R-Glencoe.
Gruenhagen, home last week from the Legislature on the Easter break, said the Republican party is offering an alternative plan to that proposed by Gov. Mark Dayton and the DFL.
While the DFL program dedicates about $10 billion toward transportation, the GOP bill is planning to invest $7.1 billion.

GSL engineering students show off their hard work

Students from Glencoe-Silver Lake High School’s “Principles of Engineering” class had the chance to show off the fruits of their month’s labors when they demonstrated a number of material sorters to guests on Monday, March 30.
Four groups of students had spent the previous three weeks planning and building intricate sorters to separate metal marbles from wooden ones. The project was intended to create the type of sorting system that would separate differing items at a recycling plant.
