GSL Knowledge Bowl team captures state title

At the end of the last practice before the state meet, Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Coach Vicky Harris told the Knowledge Bowlers they were one of the most amazing groups in the state, and certainly work harder than anyone else in Knowledge Bowl. She showed them a picture of a sign that said “Go Out and Be Amazing.” She thought that if they could just show everyone how amazing they really were, that would be all they needed to do.

Vehicles collide at Morningside, 212

Five people sustained non-life-threatening injuries following a two-vehicle accident at Morningside Drive and Highway 212 Saturday at about 5:40 p.m.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Glen A. Pettis, 51, of Hector, was eastbound on Highway 212 and a 1996 Buick LeSabre, driven by Alice Donnay, 77, of Glencoe, was southbound on Morningside Drive when they collided in the intersection.

County decides to hire full-time health director

After trying to fill the vacant public health director position in a different way, McLeod County commissioners went back to the drawing board to have business as usual.
The board had voted to hire a lesser involved deputy public health director to lead the department until options are examined, including possibly combining the director position with another county.

Medical examiner investigated 183 deaths in 2014

In 2014 McLeod County experienced a 9 percent decrease in deaths that were investigated by the medical examiner’s office, reported Chief Medical Examiner Dr. A. Quinn Strobl at the April 7 Board of Commissioners meeting.
The total of 183 death cases compared to 204 in 2013, 178 in 2012, 152 in 2011 and 183 in 2010. Strobl said 45 cases were registered in hospice and 135 cremations were approved. There was one death classified as homicide.

GSL to hire full-time psychologist for 2015-16

Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) will have another full-time school psychologist in 2015-16, the School Board decided Monday night.
Elementary Principal Bill Butler said the district currently has a full-time school psychologist and a full-time counselor for its elementary program.
The psychologist’s time is almost exclusively devoted to testing of special education students, while the counselor’s position is divided between the Lakeside and Helen Baker elementary buildings.
