Betty Jean Cohrs, 70, of Glencoe

Betty Jean (Becker) Cohrs, 70, of Glencoe, went to her heavenly home Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 18, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe. The Rev. Ronald Mathison officiated, and Dawn Wolter was the organist. A duet of Hans and Shirley Kranz sang “Be Still, My Soul.” Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.”

Orlin W. Dammann, 83, of Glencoe

Orlin Willard Dammann, 83, of Glencoe, formerly of Plato, died Monday, May 11, 2015, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
Memorial services and interment were private, with Rev. Tyson  Mastin officiating. Hymns were “Abide With Me”and “Just As I Am.”

Virginia Mary Meier, 91, of Glencoe

Virginia Mary Meier, 91, of Glencoe, formerly of Plato, died Monday, May 11, 2015, at the Grand Meadows Senior Living Community in Glencoe.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, May 18, at the Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe with the Rev. Anthony Stubeda officiating. Sue Mielke was the organist and Shari Templin was the song leader. Musical selections were “Here I Am, Lord,” “Prayer of St. Francis,” “You Are Mine,” “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman” and “Blest Be the Lord.”

Orwin ‘Orv’ Emil Ide, 99, of Mesa, Ariz.

Orwin “Orv” Emil Ide, 99, of Mesa, Ariz., died Dec. 22, 2014.
He was born in Lester Prairie on Nov. 4, 1915.
He was a veteran of World War II, and a doctor of optometry for over 50 years. Mr. Ide enjoyed polka and was a member of several polka groups. When not dancing, he could be found on a golf course or making household improvements. He also was actively involved in the Lutheran church, whether he was in Minnesota or Arizona.

Daughter for Hamburg family

Darcus Alexander and Cassandra Fabel of Hamburg announce the birth of a daughter, Deondra Mariah-Jane Alexander, born May 9, 2015, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Deondra weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces, and was 191⁄2 inches long. She joins siblings Dylan Menzel, Dane Fabel, and Devon and Davionne Alexander. Grandparents are Barbara J. Gates of LaMarque, Texas, Walter J. Pines Sr. of Texas City, Texas, and Craig and Lori Fabel of Plato.
 

Daughter born to Smyths

Jim and Steph Smyth of Chaska announce the arrival of a daughter, Lilian Morisset, born April 7, 2015, at Methodist Hospital. Lilian weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces, and was 21 inches long at birth. She joins siblings Rose and Audrey. Grandparents are Pete and Barb Smyth of Eden Prairie and Bill and Diane Hlavka of Silver Lake. Great-grandparents are Florian Nowak and Adeline Hlavka, both of Silver Lake.
 

Son born to Mathwig family

Jesse and Darcie Mathwig of Maple Grove announce the arrival of a son, Grady Ernest, born April 7, 2015, at the Maple Grove hospital. Grady weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces, and was 211/2 inches long at birth. He joins a brother, Blaine, and a sister, Piper. Grandparents are Mark and Barb Mathwig of Brownton and Bruce and Julie Larson of Glenwood.

Silver Lake police chief, councilor submit resignations to Council

The Silver Lake City Council was faced with not one, but two resignations at its regular meeting on Monday, May 18.
Police Chief Forrest Henriksen submitted his resignation to the Council effective Aug. 8.
Henriksen recently became engaged to be married and his fiance lives and works in the St. Paul area where he will be moving.
“This has been one of the hardest decisions I have had to make,” Henriksen said, adding he really enjoyed his time in Silver Lake.

Pedaling for a cause: Elshoff raising awareness for Lions

If you were outside at all on Monday, May 18, you experience the unseasonably cold, mid-40 temperatures and strong winds that made being outside almost unbearable.
Hanna Elshoff, 72, experienced these elements like no one else as she traveled through the area on her solar-powered tricycle.
She left Cologne Monday morning to travel to Silver Lake to speak at the Lions Club meeting. The overcast day proved difficult and she ran out of power near Lester Prairie.
Silver Lake Lions Club member Duane Yurek hooked up his trailer and picked her up.

Memorial Day: Honoring those who gave all

During the 1980s and 1990s, which were mostly peacetime eras, attendance at area Memorial Day services steadily dwindled. People turned instead to fully enjoying the three-day weekend with camping, fishing, cookouts, picnics and other recreational activities.
