Gov. Dayton vetoes education bill

Gov. Mark Dayton vetoed the K-12 education funding bill last week because it did not provide funding for one of his pet issues — mandatory preschool for 4-year-olds.
We understand the governor has the right to veto bills he feel are unacceptable, but one would hope it would be for better reasons.

Why isn’t the city following the Chamber’s advice?

To the Editor:
This past week (May 20), I was driving in the area of 13th and Hennepin. Stopping at the stop sign, I noticed a portable advertising sign standing on the city-owned lot stating,   “Keep Glencoe vibrant: shop locally.” Not knowing the owner of the sign, I did some checking. It was promoted by  Glencoe Chamber Of Commerce.
As you may remember, in January 2015, our city elected a new member to our city government (Mr. Robeck). He’s been asking time and time again why our city is not buying and doing business locally.

Honoring a hero — 70 years later

Seventy-one years after his plane was shot down over Germany in World War II and he was taken captive, Stewart native Norman Kottke was awarded his Prisoner of War medal.
It was presented to his widow, Adline Kottke, Monday afternoon following the Stewart Memorial Day service by representatives of the Armed Forces and U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minnesota.

Challenged with 40 job openings, Trailblazer board raises wages

Trailblazer Transit needs 32 drivers and eight administrative and support staff employees, its joint powers board heard Thursday morning.
“I’m challenged to fill 40 open positions,” said Executive Director Gary Ludwig.
The upshot, said Ludwig, is that there is a huge demand for drivers right now in all aspects of the economy.
“The economy is doing very well at the moment, and transportation is one of the leading factors in that recovery,” said Ludwig. “We’re losing drivers.”

Legislators: Gas tax hike would hurt more than help

While Minnesota’s roads and bridges are in need of repairs and upgrades, raising the gas tax to fund them probably will hurt the economy more than it will help.
That’s the message state Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen, R-Glencoe, and state Sen. Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, brought to constituents at a town hall meeting Thursday in Glencoe.
Newman said the proposal was to base the gas tax on wholesale gas prices. “It would have gone up and down with the cost of wholesale gas,” he said.

Trailblazer lauded by MnDOT for its service in Wright County

Trailblazer Transit received high praise from Tom Gottfried, program director for the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) Office of Transit at the joint powers board’s Thursday morning meeting.
Gottfried lauded Trailblazer for its success in incorporating most of Wright County’s communities into its service area.
Gottfried said Trailblazer began work on taking in Wright County into its service area well over a year ago after River Rider, which served Wright and Sherburne counties, was slated to dissolve in July 2014.
