Fire departments need volunteers

The Glencoe Fire Department is looking for a few good volunteers.
So are many other volunteer fire departments across the state, and the nation, particularly in rural areas.
The shortage has been documented by studies and well-reported throughout the state and national media. While studies show that volunteer departments are dwindling in numbers, the harder question to address is “why?”
Is it a lack of time, more stringent training requirements, a more transient population, less community commitment?

We were the original ‘free-range’ kids

“Free-range kids.”
I heard the term recently, and it took me a while to compose myself after the laughter.
Free-range kids seems to be a new derogatory term where parents allow their children to run around unattended or not on a short enough leash. Parents can now be chastised by police and society for being bad parents. How dare you let your children out of your sight? How can you not know where your children are every minute? Is there something wrong with you parents?

Too early to talk about demolition

To the Editor:
In response to Daniel Perschau’s letter to the editor last week, he indicated “the GSL school board members and administration have simply averted their eyes from the financial responsibility” for funding the disposition of Helen Baker.

April 29 blood drive exceeded its goal by 18 units

To the Editor:
I want to thank all of the patient donors who took time out of their day on Wednesday, April 29, to donate at the Glencoe Community Blood Drive.
The American Red Cross (ARC) set our goal at 122 units and we surpassed that goal by collecting 140 units. Awesome! We had 103 qualified whole-blood donors and 19 double-red donors.

Firefighters: ultimate community volunteers

Scott Dietz has been a member of the Glencoe Fire Department for 29 years, Ryan Dordling joined a little over a year ago.
But despite the difference in longevity, they both joined for very similar reasons — they had relatives who were volunteer firefighters, and they admired what those volunteers contributed to their communities.
And both would encourage others to join a volunteer fire department.
“It’s a good way to get involved in your community,” said Dordling.
