School Board approves election results, plans next steps for project

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School District’s unofficial May 12 election results are now official.
The School Board met in a special session Monday morning to officially canvass the election results, among other agenda items.
The official canvass shows that the district’s not-to-exceed $24.19 million building bond passed with 1,534 “yes” votes to 908 “no” votes, a 626-vote margin.
Business Manager Michelle Sander said there are a couple of “next steps.”

Scholarships announced at annual GSL senior night

A great number of scholarships was announced at Sunday evening’s Glencoe-Silver Lake High School senior awards program. The program was preceded by a banquet hosted by the booster  club.
Scholarships awarded included:
• American Legion Post 95, Glencoe, which gave five $500 scholarships: Aaron Boraas, Matthew Dahlke, Austin Maynard, Alyssa Overman and Courtney Zajicek.
• American Legion Auxiliary Unit 95, Glencoe, two $200 scholarships: Becca Green and Josie Schmitt.

Supermileage team majestically returns from Kansas City, Brainerd competitions

With the sight of flashing lights and the sound of sirens, the Glencoe-Silver Lake Supermileage Team majestically returned home Tuesday, May 12, after a week of exhibition and competition in Kansas City and Brainerd.
“It was a lot of fun,” team co-captain Brent Duenow said. “We got to meet and talk to a bunch of people.”

Eagle Scout candidate helps spiff up BMX park

The Glencoe BMX park on Ninth Street East got a facelift last weekend, thanks to the efforts of Glencoe Boy Scout Michael Dietz.
Dietz, the son of Kevin and Linda Dietz of Glencoe, coordinated a landscaping, flagpole and other improvements project for the park as part of his application to become an Eagle Scout.
Michael Dietz said he and his dad heard about needed improvements at the park while having a conversation with Ryan Voss, manager of the park.

GSL School Board approves staffing changes at regular May 11 meeting

The Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) School Board approved several staffing items as part of its consent agenda at its regular meeting Monday, May 11, including:
• Two retirements. Mary Eckhoff, business teacher, is planning to retire at the end of the current school year; as is Joan Cousins, a 28.5 hours-per-week paraprofessional in the Early Childhood Special Education program.

Glencoe Planning Commission considers pool special use permit

The city of Glencoe’s Planning Commission quickly took care of business at its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, May 14.
During the 25-minute meeting, the commission set a public hearing in regard to a special use permit application submitted by Ted Collins.
Collins would like to install a 14,000-gallon above-ground pool in his already fenced-in backyard. The pool would be used for therapeutic purposes for his wife, who suffers from multiple sclerosis.
