GSL competes at True Team

The Glencoe-Silver Lake track and field teams competed at the Section 6AA True Team meet, held on Tuesday, May 5, at Litchfield High School. The Panthers boys’ took third, with the girls’ team taking eighth.
The True Team format rewards deeper teams for assigning point values to each competitor in an event commensurate to their finish, rather than only logging points for top finishers.

Softball loses two in extras

Back-to-back extra-inning losses last week dropped the Glencoe-Silver Lake softball team to 5-7 overall and 5-3 in the Wright County West Conference this spring.
“We’re certainly having trouble scoring lately,” coach Steve Davis said. “We just can’t get the bats going.”

Baseball keeps up winning ways

Be it a shiny and warm day at the ballpark, or gloomy and cold, it made no difference to the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team. The Panthers sandwiched the weekend with a pair of victories to run their winning streak to three games and keep pace with neighboring Hutchinson atop the Wright County Conference West.

GSL building bond passes

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School District’s $24.19 million building bond issue was approved by district voters on Tuesday, according to unofficial results announced after the polls closed.
The proposal passed with 1,534 yes votes to 908 no votes.
The vote passed in four of the five precincts, with the following unofficial tallies — Brownton: 215 in favor, 84 against; Glencoe: 861 in favor, 361 against; New Auburn: 43 in favor, 97 against; Plato: 165 in favor, 143 against; and Silver Lake: 250 in favor and 223 against.

Orlin Dammann, 83, of Glencoe

Orlin Dammann, 83, of Glencoe, formerly of Plato, died Monday, May 11, 2015, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
The memorial service and interment will be private.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday, May 13, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe.

Update: Names released in fatal accident

The Minnesota State Patrol has released the name of a man who died of injuries he suffered in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 7 near Omega Avenue,  east of Hutchinson, just before 10 a.m. today. He is George J. Horrmann Jr., 81, of Hutchinson.

Penny Lucille Verdeck, 40, of Glencoe

Penny Lucille (Meyer) Verdeck, 40, of Glencoe, died Sunday, April 26, 2015, doing what she loved — preparing to race — near Glencoe.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 30, at Christ Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Katherine Rood officiating. Twyla Kirkeby was the organist. Soloist Randy Wilson sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” Congregational hymns were “On Eagle’s Wings,” “In the Garden” and “Borning Cry.”

Ella Meta Ide, 93, of Lester Prairie

Ella Meta (Dittmer) Ide, 93, of Lester Prairie, died Monday, April 27, 2015, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care in Glencoe.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 1, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, with the Rev. Travis Loeslie officiating. Nancy Buckentine was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Just As I Am,” “Amazing Grace,” “Let Me Be Thine Forever” and “Abide With Me.”

Frank A. Donnay, 83, Park Rapids

Frank Andrew Donnay, 83, of Park Rapids and Menahga, died Saturday, May 2, 2015, at St. Joseph’s Area Health Services in Park Rapids, surrounded by many of his children and grandchildren.

4th-annual Mileka’s Run set Sunday

The fourth-annual “Mileka’s Run,” a 5K run/walk and kids’ walk, is set for Sunday, May 10, Mother’s Day, starting at the city park in Silver Lake.
The run is hosted by the family of Mileka Hall, who died on Mother’s Day weekend in 2011 from injuries sustained in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident.
In her honor, her family — mother JoAnna Hall, father Kyle Wawrzyniak and sisters Brianna and Ashley Hall — have organized this 5K run/walk to celebrate Mileka’s life and her positive impact on others.
