County Board looks at scaling back jail project

Reduced square footage, reconfiguration of the sally port, a different bidding period and the hiring of a construction manager may all be options as the McLeod County Board looks at ways to reduce the cost of its proposed jail expansion and courthouse security project.
The County Board met in a workshop session Tuesday morning with architect John McNamara of Wold Architects, and also heard from representatives of the Integrity Group, a construction management firm, on ways a construction manager could help save money on the project.

St. Pius sisters returning to India

After 15 years away, it’s time to go home.
Sisters Viji Grace Kochuniravath and Leeja Mappalakayil, who have served at St. Pius X for the last 10 years, will return to India in July.
Kochuniravath and Mappalakayil first came to Minnesota 15 years ago as part of a missionary program their order, Franciscan Clarist, has run since 1970. The move was a rare opportunity that only a few in the order experience.
“It’s a very special calling,” Mappalakayil said.

County Board hires public health agency coordinator

Jennifer Hauser was appointed as the new McLeod County Public Health Agency coordinator by the Board of Commissioners at its June 16 meeting.
When the position first opened, the county considered different ways to re-structure the job. When there was not a lot of interest, especially internally, the board went back to fill the original job description. Hauser previously worked for the county and will start in July.
Human Resources Director Mary Jo Wieseler presented several staff recommendations from the June 9 personnel committee meeting.

County Board votes to expand scope of emergency warning system

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners voted to improve the scope of how residents are warned in case of emergencies at its June 16 meeting.
Emergency Management Director Kevin Mathews asked the board to approve the Integrated Public Alert Warning System (IPAWS) Addendum for the CodeRED mass notification system.
The wireless system is from Emergency Communications Network, LLC, costing $2,500, with funding coming from a regional emergency management grant.
