Brownton snags two more Crow River Valley League wins

The Brownton Bruins sandwiched two Crow River Valley League (CRVL) wins around a non-league loss this past week.
The Bruins drubbed the visiting Cologne Hollanders 12-1 in seven innings on Wednesday, June 17, behind a strong pitching performance by Dylan McCormick. McCormick threw a complete game, allowing just one run on three hits as he fanned nine and walked five.

Brewers find common theme in recent stretch

The Glencoe Brewers were involved in a trio of shutouts at Vollmer Field last week, with two of those coming in the team’s favor. The Brewers sandwiched a 13-0 loss to Plato on Friday, June 19, with a 19-0 win over Norwood two days earlier and a 3-0 defeat of Mayer two nights later.

Plato wins three straight

Three straight victories have propelled the Plato Blue Jays to a 10-3 overall record heading into this week. The bats were a-swingin’ for Plato over the three-game stretch, with the Blue Jays scoring 34 runs total in wins against Hamburg, Glencoe and Waconia. 

Omaha smiles upon GSL 14U baseballers

It was quite an experience for the Glencoe-Silver Lake 14U baseball team when the Panthers headed to Omaha, Nebraska, last week. Not only did the local boys get a chance to take in the College World Series, but they also had a successful appearance in a tournament of their own.
“The trip was great,” coach Rick Roepke said. “The College World Series was awesome and we were pleasantly surprised at how we did in the tournament.”

Silver Lake Council reviews survey results

The city of Silver Lake conducted a citywide survey in September 2014. The city’s planning commission hand delivered 358 surveys to city residents; 140 were returned.
The data has been compiled and the planning commission met to discuss the results. The commission’s discussion and survey results were presented to the City Council at its regular meeting Monday, June 15.

Stewart family loses home to fire

A Stewart family is homeless after a house fire on Tuesday, June 9.
According to Stewart Fire Chief Dean Nelson, the fire was discovered at about 9:45 a.m. by homeowner Jim Zalomsky, who had just arrived home from running an errand. No one else was at the residence when the fire was discovered.
“He opened the garage door and saw the smoke,” said Nelson.

Names sought for new veterans memorial

A Glencoe Area Veterans Memorial is being planned, according to organizers, and names are being sought for placement on the two monuments that have been purchased.
The memorial is for any veteran that has passed away, living veterans in the area, veterans who have recently moved to the area, and those who have moved away since their service time. Next of kin of the deceased may provide the appropriate information.

Jerome A. Ewert, 95, of Buffalo Lake

Jerome A. Ewert, 95, of Buffalo Lake, formerly of Stewart, died Sunday, June 7, 2015, at the Buffalo Lake Health Care Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, June 12, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart with the Rev. Gerald Meidl officiating. Amanda Hendrickson was the organist, and song leaders were Amanda Hendrickson and Grace Maiers. 

Willard ‘Bud’ Meier, 96, of Glencoe

Willard “Bud” Meier, 96, of Glencoe, formerly of Plato, died Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Grand Meadows Senior Living in Glencoe.

Sarah Elsie Terlinden, 97, of Glencoe

Sarah Elsie (Boesche) Terlinden, 97, of Glencoe, died Thursday, June 11, 2015, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 13, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe. The Rev. Ronald Mathison officiated. Dawn Wolter was the organist. Soloist RaNaye Odegaard sang “Asleep in Jesus,” and soloist Jennifer Becker sang “The Lord’s My Shepherd.” Congregational hymns were “For All The Saints” and “Abide With Me.”
