Remember to fly your flag on Flag Day, June 14

To the Editor:
June 14, 2015, is Flag Day. Displaying the flag is the privilege of every citizen of this country.
Remember to display your flag. You can display the U.S. flag proudly; it is an indicator of national unity as well as a sign of respect. We need to be reminded of our obligation to preserve our freedoms for generations to come. Citizens, fly your flag on June 14 and every day if you can.
A few guidelines regarding our flag are:
• Replace a flag when it is badly weathered.

Local artists featured in Avera Cancer Institute art collection

The bright mosaic and serene photographs of two area artists are now featured in the Avera Cancer Institute in Marshall. Glencoe residents Shanda Landes and Mary Mulenburg are two of 16 southwestern Minnesota artists that make up the collection. Landes constructed a mosaic of a river landscape while Mulenburg submitted four nature photographs.

GSL board approves bond sale for financing of building project

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board approved the call for sale of bonds at a meeting Monday night after hearing a presentation from Ehlers Municipal Advisor Jeff Seeley. The bonds will be used for the building project that begins in spring of 2016.

Plans shaping up for Glencoe Days

The annual Glencoe Days celebration is set for June 26-27.
A predecessor to the actual celebration will be the Dairy Day celebration on Thursday, June 25. That day’s activities include the Glencoe Lions Club picnic, machinery hill, Glencoe Fire Department display and “Adventures in Dairy Land,” all from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Oak Leaf Park. The midway amusement rides also will open at 5 p.m. that day.

School Board OKs Aug. 31 start date

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board approved a revision to the 2015-2016 school year calendar at its meeting Monday night. The first day of school will be Aug. 31 and the last day for students will be May 20. Graduation will also be held on May 20.
The board received special approval from the Minnesota Department of Education to start before Labor Day because of the construction scheduled to begin in spring of 2016.
Also for the 2015-2016 school year, the board approved an increase to meal prices and activity fees.

County looks at County Road 54 fixes

McLeod County commissioners took a first step to fix the poor road conditions on County Road 54 between County Road 87 and County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 7 near Lake Marion.
A new road resurfacing process used on the four-mile stretch of road last year did not work out and ways to improve the road quality have been sought ever since.

City Council hears updates on project, Heat in the Street

Public Works Director Gary Schreifels updated the Glencoe City Council on the Lincoln Park street project at its meeting Monday, June 1.
Schreifels reported crews are working on installing the waterline on Eighth Street from Greeley Avenue by the skating rink to the water plant. The temporary line has been tied into the water plant to feed the neighborhood residents while crews continue to put in the new water lines.
The sanitary sewer line installation on Ford Avenue was expected to start Tuesday, June 2, and continue through the week, weather permitting.

Care Connection, Disabled American Veterans partnership

The Care Connection Thrift Store and Hutchinson Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary continued their partnership on June 3 with a donation of $250 from the auxiliary to the Allina Health Hospice that runs the store.

County Board amends CUP for gravel mining

A conditional use permit (CUP) for mining an existing gravel site in Bergen Township near Lester Prairie was approved by McLeod County Commissioners at the June 2 meeting after some tweaks were made to appease protesting residents.
Another CUP at the same site that includes production of hot mix asphalt was tabled because it was not made clear in the notice to residents. Another public hearing will be conducted in this case but the application fees will be waived.
