July 8th

Larsen claims gold at Senior Games

Hank Larsen brought home a gold medal on Sunday.
Larsen, who turns 75 this month and has called Glencoe home for more than half of those years, was the triathlon champion in the 75-79 age group at the 2015 National Senior Games. The games are currently being held in the Twin Cities.
“It was a lot of fun,” Larsen said.

VFW 5102 nearing playoffs

It’s the final full week for the Glencoe VFW 5102 baseball team and the squad is looking well prepared for a nice playoff push.
Glencoe kicked off its final seven-game regular-season stretch by winning 4-2 at Becker on Monday night to push the team’s record to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in league play.

Post 641 nipped by Jordan; tourney next week

The Plato Legion Post 641 baseball team kicked off its post-Independence Day schedule with a back-and-forth battle against visiting Jordan on Monday night at Vollmer Field. Unfortunately for the hosts, the visitors had the final say, claiming a 5-4 win in nine innings.
What had been a pitcher’s duel for the first three innings turned offensive in the fourth, with Jordan staking itself to a 3-0 lead on a series of singles and doubles.

NYA couple dies in motorcycle crash

A Norwood Young America couple died Wednesday night as the result of a motorcycle accident, according to the Carver County Sheriff's Office. Heidi Gongoll, 40, a passenger on the motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Patrick Gongoll, also 40, was taken by ambulance to the 212 Medical Center, where he died as a result of his injuries.

Good crowd at Music in the Park

Over 250 people enjoyed a beautiful summer evening for the first Music in the Park on Thursday, June 25, in Silver Lake with music by Cindy’s Concertina Band and lunch by the Pola-Czesky Royalty.

23 Brownton seniors met on Monday

Twenty-three Brownton senior citizens met Monday, June 29, at the Brownton Community Center.
Cards were played after the meeting with the following winners — 500, Gladys Rickert, first, and Alice Olson, second; pinochle, Betty Katzenmeyer, first, and Ruby Streich, second; and sheephead, Lil Lindeman, first, and Norma Albrecht, second.
Phyllis Mahnke won the door prize. Gladys Rickert served refreshments.

Ervin A. Schauer, 84, of Litchfield

Ervin A. Schauer, 84, of Litchfield, died Monday, June 22, 2015, at the Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.
A funeral service was held Friday, June 26, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Interment was in the Lake Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield. Military honors were provided by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard.

Sheryl ‘Sheri’ Lowden, of New Auburn

Sheryl “Sheri” Lowden, 75, of New Auburn, died Tuesday, June 23, 2015, at Oak Terrace Health Care Center in Gaylord.
A gathering of family and friends was held Friday, June 26, at the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe. Interment will be at a later date in High Island Cemetery in New Auburn.

Marty Klockmann Jr., 46, of Brownton

Martin “Marty” Phillip Klockmann Jr., 46, of Brownton, died Tuesday, June 23, 2015, in an accident near his home in the country by Brownton.

Harry Drahos, 87, of Excelsior

Harry Drahos, 97, of Excelsior, died Wednesday, June 24, 2015, surrounded by his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, June 29, at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Oakdale, with interment in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Mr. Drahos’ family was a very important part of his life. He also was proud of his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II and his 40 years with the United States Post Office.
