Konen graduates at River Falls

Hayley Konen of Silver Lake received her degree during spring commencement ceremonies at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Konen earned a bachelor of science in marketing communications. 

Nancy J. Ondracek, 80, of Hutchinson

Nancy Jane Ondracek, 80, of Hutchinson, died Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at Country Manor Rehab Center in Sartell.
 
A gathering of family, friends and fellowship was held Sunday, July 19, at the Dobratz-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Hutchinson.
 

Kosek on St. Kate’s dean’s list

Brooke Kosek, daughter of Robert and Paige Kosek of Glencoe, was named to the dean’s list at St. Catherine University in St. Paul for the spring 2015 semester. Kosek is majoring in nursing. To earn a spot on the list, students must have a GPA of 3.667 or higher. 

July 17th

Highway 15 work south of Brownton to start Monday

A mill and overlay project with two culvert replacements on Highway 15 from Highway 19 in Winthrop to Highway 212 in Brownton is scheduled to begin Monday, July 20th.

A detour will go into effect on Monday, July 20th. The detour route is listed below.

Detour – Winthrop, Hwy 19 east to Hwy 22, Hwy 22 north to Hwy 212, Hwy 212 west to Hwy 15

The cost of the project is $4 million dollars.

The project is scheduled to be complete by the end of September.

Work to begin Friday on 30th, 100th streets

Rehabilitation projects on County Roads 17 (30th Street) and 26 (100th Street) are scheduled to begin Friday, July 17. County Road 17 will close today (Thursday) and County Road 26 will close tomorrow (Friday). County Road 17 is south of Brownton; County Road 26 is northwest of Brownton, and west of Highway 15.
Knife River of Sauk Rapids, MN was awarded the projects.

‘Affirmative consent’ is still in a gray area

nesota should be applauded for trying to be more proactive in preventing campus sexual assaults. Statistics say one in five women on college campuses are the victim of some form of sexual assault. Any effort to reduce that statistic is welcome.
The University of Minnesota recently proposed an “affirmative assent” policy — in effect, each partner in a potential sexual encounter must provide a verbal “yes” or some other clear symbol before engaging in a sexual act.

What ideals does the Confederate flag represent?

To the Editor:
I lived in the Richmond, Virginia, area off and on for over 20 years beginning in 1965, so I have been following the Confederate battle flag controversy with a great deal of interest.
A flag — any flag — is representative of the ideals of those who created and flew it.
So what did this flag represent?

School Board awards bid on bond sale

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board resolved to accept a bid for the bonds put up for sale last month. The board awarded the sale to Piper Jaffray and Co. of Minneapolis.
Ehlers Financial Specialist Betsy Knoche presented the five bids from the July 13 sale at the regular board meeting Monday night. Piper Jaffray’s price is $24,303,591.50, higher than the projected premium price.

Sonju receives favorable evaluation

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board heard a report on the formal evaluation of Superintendent Chris Sonju at the regular meeting Monday night. Personnel Committee Directors and Board Members Anne Twiss and Clark Christianson presented the report.
Twiss said Sonju had good overall job performance and the committee was pleased with the progress he has made in the goals set for the district.

Security Bank, Hoese family provide support for GRHS remodeling

Glencoe Regional Health Services (GRHS) has accepted a $311,000 gift from Security Bank & Trust Co. and the Hoese Family to support a remodeling project in its hospital transitional care unit. The project includes a new patient and family lounge as well as treatment and equipment rooms for respiratory therapy services.
