Vikings looking to build a ‘magnet’

Are we the only ones who find it ironic that the Minnesota Vikings, who coaxed state taxpayers into building them a new stadium, are now looking to build a “destination development” in Eagan?
It was recently announced that the Vikings have a purchase agreement on 194 acres in Eagan, on which they intend to build a new Winter Park practice facility. It also was announced that the Vikings want to build a “magnet” around that facility, including a 10,000-seat stadium, a hotel, and a conference and event center.

I’m an elite runner, if the weather is ideal

I’m an elite runner.
And by elite, I don’t mean that I’m outstanding runner. It means I only run when conditions are perfect: no rain, low humidity, low dew point, a whisper of a breeze and temperatures preferrably in the mid to upper 50s.
The last week of August and the first week of September were less than ideal. In fact, they came no where close to meeting my standards. It was hot and humid.

Adjusting power against the squirrels, dirt

I was sitting in my lawn chair, with my adult beverage and book — dodging nuts!
One nut hit me on the shoulder. I moved a bit. The next shell hit me on top of the head. I moved again.
Pretty soon I was out of the shade and into the hot sun. That defeated the purpose of being outside, enjoying my backyard nature scenes.

POW/MIA recognition day Friday

To the Editor:
POW/MIA recognition day is Sept. 18.
The POW/MIA flag appears always in mournful black and white.
The man’s head is bowed in silhouette. Above is a guard tower; below are the words “You are not forgotten.”
And three decades after a former Army pilot first sketched the stark image to commemorate those missing in action from America’s longest war, it has become an enduring emblem of Vietnam, a flag second in popularity only to Old Glory itself.

Board did not recommend pond in cemetery

To the Editor:
In last week’s Chronicle, it was stated by a high-ranking city official that the Cemetery Board in recent years has considered adding a pond for aesthetic reasons, as a point of beauty in the city cemetery.
Let’s get the record corrected. The Cemetery Board has never recommended creating a pond, an eyesore like this. Historians rate societies on their reverence toward their deceased loved ones. We prefer to leave this sanctuary in the pristine conditon it is, and not build a monument to storm water or mosquitoes.

Final grant in place, taxiway construction begins

The Glencoe City Council resolved to accept a grant for the Glencoe Municipal Airport taxiway project from the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The grant is for $101,813, which is 5 percent of the project’s cost.
The remaining cost is divided between the city and a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA grant covers 90 percent of the project’s cost while the city will pay the remaining 5 percent.

GSL Board votes to close Helen Baker School in ’17

After hosting a public hearing on Monday night, the Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) School Board resolved to close the Helen Baker Elementary School building during its regular meeting that night.
The hearing was  held at 6 p.m. and was part of a legal process required to close a schoolhouse. One member of the public was in attendance.

Grams leaves big shoes to fill for 4-H coordinator job

The kids, Jill Grams said, were the greatest joy of being the 4-H coordinator for McLeod County for 13 years.
Grams recently left that position to teach agriculture and be the FFA adviser at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart High School.
“Those are going to be big shoes to fill,” McLeod County Commissioner Paul Wright said of finding a replacement for the 4-H program.

GSL School Board approves bring your own device policy

Students at Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Schools will now have the chance to use their devices, such as smart phones and tablets, at school. The GSL School Board approved a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy for the district during its regular Monday night meeting.
The Board also waived a second reading, so the policy will go into effect right away.
