Update on summer legislative issues

By state Sen. Scott Newman
R-Hutchinson
The following are some issues that have come up over the summer. I thought I would briefly bring you up to date regarding their current status as I understand them to be at this time:
• MSOP: The Minnesota Sex Offender Program (MSOP) has been ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge in a class action suit brought by a number of civilly committed sex offenders. They are claiming they have been civilly (not criminally) incarcerated and held without any chance of ever being released.

Cemetery holding pond will be a real eyesore

To the Editor:
Will someone please tell me why we need to put a holding pond in the middle of our beautiful city cemetery? Also why didn’t anyone seem to know about it until after it has been staked?

Why the big sinkhole in the city cemetery?

To the Editor:
I was at a get-together with friends last week and one of them asked me what I thought of the big hole they were going to dig in the north-central part of the city cemetery, with one end very close to the Lutheran section. He then said it’s all staked out, so go take a look.

A Gold Star for Glencoe mother — 45 years later

A mother’s love never fades or falters. Evelyn Schrupp is proof of that notion. In a ceremony for which she had waited 45 years, Schrupp finally received her mother’s Gold Star — a pin honoring the death of her son in the Vietnam War in 1970 and recognizing her sacrifice.
As Lt. Col. Patrick Cornwell of the National Guard pinned the Gold Star on Schrupp’s VFW Auxiliary vest on Aug. 28, all she said was: “I’ve waited so long for this.”

County Board hears request for barking, loose dog ordinance

The McLeod County Board expressed reluctance Tuesday morning when it was asked to consider an ordinance to regulate barking and loose dogs.
Dale Nowak of rural Silver Lake had sent a letter to commissioners about a possible ordinance, and appeared at Tuesday’s meeting to discuss it.
Nowak said he had a neighbor whose dog had chased people walking on his road. The dog has been contained, but now barks persistently, Nowak said, sometimes up to five hours.

County Board hears updates on energy, highway projects

McLeod County’s efforts to improve the energy efficiency of its Health and Human Services Building on Ford Avenue are not proceeding as quickly as hoped.
Scott Grivna, the county’s building maintenance supervisor, told the County Board Tuesday morning that the contractor for the brick tuck pointing had not only not started work, but was asking to postpone it to spring 2016.
“They’re trying to push us out to next spring,” said Grivna. “Unfortunately, we need to get this (the tuck pointing) done before we do other things.”

New Auburn man hurt in motorcycle mishap

Brandon M. Deraad, 24, of New Auburn, was injured in a motorcycle accident on Highway 22 near Shilling Lake Road by New Auburn on Friday, Aug. 28, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The accident was reported at about 4:30 p.m.
According to the State Patrol, Deraad was southbound on Highway 22 on a 2006 Suzuki Street Bike when he lost control while trying to pass vehicles.
Deraad was taken by the Glencoe Ambulance to the Glencoe hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Givens makes first court appearance

Emily Louise Givens, 25, of Prior Lake, made a brief first court appearance Monday in McLeod County District Court.
Givens is facing a felony charge of criminal vehicular homicide resulting in death charge, a misdemeanor charge of careless driving, and a misdemeanor charge of unlawful use of a wireless communications device while driving in connection with an April accident in which Givens’ vehicle allegedly struck and killed Glencoe resident Penny Verdeck as she was riding a bicycle on a county road just north of Glencoe.

Planning Commission considers preliminary plat, CUP applications

The McLeod County Planning Advisory Commission approved a preliminary plat for Jeremiah and Christine Kesler of Brownton to remodel an existing building on their newly purchased property in Sumter Township into a dwelling.
The property is located near  Lake Addie and the lot is within the 100 year flood plain, but the dwelling itself would be out of that plain.
