Girls soccer team wins opener

Volleyball improves to 3-0

An impressive season-opening run continued for the Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team last week as the Panthers swept both section rival Norwood Young America at home and conference foe Mound Westonka on the road, winning both matches without losing a single game.

GSL, which has yet to lose a game in any of its three matches this season, improved to 3-0 with a 25-23, 25-17, 25-19 defeat of the Raiders in front of a full house and a spirited home crowd on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Girls soccer claims first win

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team opened their home schedule in fine style by defeating visiting Worthington on Tuesday, Sept. 8, but the Panthers were blanked 7-0 in their first conference road game at Mound Westonka two days later.

GSL and Worthington were tied 0-0 at halftime of their contest, before forward Shelby Clouse was knocked down in the box five minutes into the second half to earn a penalty kick. Midfielder Emily Thalmann converted the kick for a 1-0 lead.

Panthers drop three on tennis court

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ tennis team remained winless on the season after dropping two games in the Orono Triangular and losing a dual match at St. Peter, on Friday, Sept. 4.

The Panthers fell 6-1 to New London-Spicer and 7-0 to host Orono in the triangular on Friday morning before turning the bus south to St. Peter, where they again suffered a 6-1 setback.

GSL’s lone wins of the day both came from the No. 1 doubles tandem of Teanna Vorlicek and Lindsay Wedin, who bested their counterparts from NL-S and St. Peter.

Panthers storm to 3-0

Not upset-minded visitors nor unwelcome weather delays could not keep the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team from a less-than swift completion of a 3-0 record.

The Panthers overcame both a scrappy opponent and a two-hour lightning-filled intermission during the third quarter to defeat Annandale 40-13 in GSL’s home opener on Friday, Sept. 4.

Blue Jays win state championship

Who says cats and birds don’t play well together?

The Plato Blue Jays were feeling fine about felines after claiming the third state Class C championship in team history on Labor Day – with a very large assist coming from a Wildcat that roared.
