Son born to Brownton couple

Troy Uecker and Danielle Battcher of Brownton announce the birth of a son, Christian Daniel Uecker, born Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Christian weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces, and was 20 inches in length. He joins siblings Kaitlyn, Jaden, Evan and Darrin. Grandparents are Mark and Mary Battcher of Plato and Reggie and Kathy Uecker of Brownton. Great-grandparents are Margaret Koester of Glencoe and Merl and Jodell Battcher of Arlington.

Girl for Arlington couple

Brent Lindemann and Amanda Schmidt of Arlington announce the arrival of a daughter, Aaliyah Grace Lindeman, born Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Aaliyah weighed 8 pounds and was 191⁄2 inches in length at birth. She joins a sister, Audrey. Grandparents are Larry and Edna Lindemann of Arlington and Tracy Schmidt of Plato. Great-grandmothers are Alice Friauf of Glencoe and Mildred Lindemann of Gaylord.
 

Daughter for Glencoe couple

Scotty Matlock and Amber Thomes of Glencoe announce the birth of a daughter, Payton Elise Matlock, born Jan. 1, 2015, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Payton’s birth weight was 9 pounds, 7 ounces, and she was 221⁄2 inches long. She joins siblings Keirsten, Wyatt and Kendall. Grandparents are Rick and Susan Thomes of Silver Lake, Ronald and Sarah Matlock of Forrest City, Ark., and Terry and Lydia Binion of Anna, Texas.

Named to GAC dean’s list

The following students were named to the fall semester dean’s list at Gustavus Adolphus College (GAC) in St. Peter: Morgan Sanken, Brownton; and Jonah Butler, Oakley Clark and Beatrice Winter, Glencoe.
 

Sikkila named to dean’s list

Paige Sikkila, daughter of Jim and Robin Sikkila of Brownton was named to the fall semester dean’s list at Rochester Community and Technical College. To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.0 to 4.0 and complete 12 or more credits.
 

Son born to Decker, Ziemer

Craig Decker and Tanya Ziemer of Hutchinson announce the birth of a son, Owen Nicholas Decker, born Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at Hutchinson Health. Owen weighed 6 pounds, 1 ounce, and was 181⁄2 inches long. He joins siblings Kiera and Kelsa Ziemer. Grandparents are Nick and Debi Decker of Litchfield and Gene and Karen Konerza of Glencoe.

Brian and Jessica Johnson of Minnetrista announce the arrival of a daughter, Vanessa Lyn, born Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia. Vanessa weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 181⁄2 inches long. She joins siblings Juliana and Cameron. Grandparents are Milan and Laurie Alexander of Glencoe and Larry and Kathy Johnson of Hector. Great-grandparents are Mabel Stradtmann of Glencoe, Virginia Alexander Eckers of Minnetonka and Frank and Babe Johnson of Hutchinson.
 

Free tuition does not address rising costs

President Barack Obama recently proposed free tuition for two years of community college for students.
“Today I’m announcing an ambitious new plan to bring down the cost of community college tuition in this country,” President Obama said in Tennessee on Friday, Jan. 9. “I want to bring it down to zero. I want to make it free.”

It’s funny how you can look at the same thing day after day without really noticing it.
I was brushing my teeth the other day, and was trying to squeeze the last gob of toothpaste out of a nearly empty tue when I noticed that the toothpaste was specially formulate for people “with over 50 years of experience.”
Experience in what, I wondered. So I asked the question on Facebook, because that always attracts quality answers. This is what I got: “chewing,” “flapping your gums” and “life.”
