Busy week for gymnasts

It was an arduous first week of 2016 for the Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnastics team, with the Panthers traveling about the state for a trio of meets in St. Peter, Watertown and Big Lake.

“I think the week for the squad went well,” coach Kim Hahn said. “Thursday, I think the girls were a little tired from Tuesday’s meet, but Saturday they seemed to bounce back and have a great meet overall. It was a busy week for them.”

Girls' cagers in a groove

The new year began in victorious manner for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team, with the Panthers cruising to a pair of home victories last week.

GSL, coming off a runner-up finish in the Hayfield Tournament to close out 2015, opened 2016 by blowing out Belle Plaine, 71-25, on Tuesday, Jan. 5, and then topping Litchfield, 56-42, on Friday, Jan. 8.

“I don’t want to jinx anything, but we’ve won four of our last five against some good opponents,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said.

Grapplers win Ogilvie Invite

The Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team earned itself some championship hardware on Saturday, Jan. 9. The Panthers won the 36th annual Ogilvie Lion Invitational with a sensational come-from-behind performance, and they did so without two of their top performers in co-captains Tristan Weber and Nick Brelje.

Boys' hoops earn two much needed wins

As the calendar turned from 2015 to 2016, so did the fortunes of the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team. The Panthers, who entered the new year mired in a four-game losing streak, won two of three games in the first week of January while putting to use some lessons learned at the Tartan Holiday Tournament.

“Maybe that tournament wasn’t as bad as it looked,” head coach Robb DeCorsey said. “We were playing against bigger, stronger, faster teams and that has helped us now that we are playing teams more on our level.”

Viola M.L. Rannow, 92, of Glencoe

Viola Malinda Lena (Stern) Rannow, 92, of Glencoe, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 7, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Ronald Mathison officiating. Jan Heins was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Lord, Take My Hand” and “Let Me Be Yours Forever.”
Casket bearers were Mark Schuette, Kevin Schuette, Travis Rannow, Eric Rannow, Jason Bulau, Joshua Liestman, Brennan Schuette and Richard Jannusch.

Ken Stritesky, 71, of Silver Lake

Ken Stritesky, 71, of Silver Lake, died peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, at our Lady of Peace comfort care facility in St. Paul.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Jan. 11, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake with the Rev. Paul Schumacher was the celebrant. Music was performed by Lucy Newcomb and Wade Bryan.
Casket bearers were Roger Korista, Dale Yurek, Donald Humlichek, Brian Nemec, Dale Syverston and Alan Piehl. Interment was in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Silver Lake.

Christopher G. Ziemann, Maple Grove

Christopher Gerhard Ziemann, 40, of Maple Grove, formerly of Stewart, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, at his home.
Memorial services were held Friday, Jan. 8, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Fernando with the Rev. Aaron Albrecht officiating. Vicki Herrmann was the organist. Soloist Kristen Hansch sang “I Will Rise.” Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”
Urn bearers were Collin Nordman, Emmitt Diepold, Payton Diepold, Quin Nordman, Randy Diepold and Don Kiecker.

William ‘Billy’ Behl, 59, of Winthrop

William “Billy” Behl, 59, of Winthrop, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, at his home.
A visitation celebrating his life will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, from noon to 3 p.m., at Homeward Hills, 12000 Silverwood Dr., Eden Prairie.

Daughter born to couple

Jana Voelkel and Homer Henderson of Kileen, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia, announce the arrival of a daughter, Jaida Mae Henderson, born Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Jaida weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces, and was 19 inches in length. She joins siblings Jaicha, Jaira and Judah. Grandparents are Robert Voelkel of Stewart, Pattama Voelkel of Stockbridge, Georgia, Sandra Voelkel of Stewart and Mary Ann Carter of Locust Grove, Georgia.

Boy born to Glencoe couple

Mathew Engfer and Rachelle Darland of Glencoe announce the birth of their son, Timothy Michael Lee Darland-Engfer, born Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, at Glencoe Regional Health Services. Timothy weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and was 21 inches long. He joins siblings Faith Diane and Lucas Lee. Grandparents are Vernon and Julie Darland of Glencoe.
