SL takes ownership of downtown building

The Silver Lake City Council approved the purchase of one of the two downtown buildings that have been deemed unfit for occupancy at its meeting on Monday, Oct. 17.
The tax-forfeited property was purchased from McLeod County. The other affected property has already been purchased.
The city has received quotes to raze the two buildings that have ranged from $70,000 to $110,000. It continues to look for options.
The Council also received a quote from Brett Madsen Abatement of Hutchinson for $16,500 to remove and dispose of asbestos at the site.
 

Alice Emma Paul, 89, of Silver Lake

Alice Emma Paul, 89, of Silver Lake, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016, at Cedar Crest Estate in Silver Lake.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m., at Faith Presbyterian Church in Silver Lake with the Rev. Carol Chmielewski officiating. Interment will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Kathryn ‘Kathy’ Ehlers, 68, of Glencoe

Kathryn “Kathy” Marie (Brelje) Ehlers, 68, of Glencoe, died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.

Hurtling toward election day

The Chronicle put together its annual voters’ guide the past couple of weeks, and it is included in this week’s issue.
We had mixed results with responses. We know this is a busy season with the harvest, and we know some candidates who are running unopposed may not feel the need to campaign hard. There also is the chance that our questionnaires got lost in the general busyness of our daily lives.
