Landes receives scholarship

South Dakota State University recently announced that Scott Landes, Arlington, is receiving the Graco Foundation Scholarship this academic year. Landes, son of Dan and Shanda Landes of Glencoe, is a sophomore mechanical engineering major. He is a 2015 graduate of Glencoe-Silver Lake High School.

Son born to Strobel family

Kyle and Leah Strobel of Plato announce the arrival of a son, Jackson Robert Strobel, born Sept. 30, 2016, at Ridgeview in Waconia. Jackson weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces, and was 191⁄2 inches long at birth. He joins a sibling, Henley. Grandparents are Kevin and Lee Dahlen of Dassel and Robert and Michelle Strobel of Plato. Great-grandparents are Richard and Dixie Cliff of Rosemount, Bernice Strobel of Gaylord, June Buenger of Rochester and the late Frances Strobel, Arthur and Fern Dahlen and Hubert and Lois Buenger.

Scott and Kris Mielke of Carver announce the arrival of their daughter, Ella Rose Mielke, born Sept. 19, 2016, at the Ridgeview Medical Center. Ella weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces, and was 19 inches long at birth. She joins a sister, Callie. Grandparents are Al and Sharon Mielke of Biscay and Bill and Cheri Magers of Gaylord.

Raiche would help protect horse riders’ trail rights

Raising horses is an underappreciated economic activity in McLeod County. The 2012 United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) study on equine inventory reported 90 farms had 444 horses in McLeod County. Every August, the public has a chance to see our local horses fill up the horse barns at the fair.

Ah … the fun of raking up fall leaves

There is something about dead, decaying organic matter that activates the senses.
Fall is my favorite time of the year, even though I know what follows in the coming weeks.
But autumn is a time for beautiful, bright colors contrasted against the pale blue skies with sun-splashed, still green yards. And it is time for leaf raking.
Some of my fondest childhood memories are of leaf raking … and then jumping into the piles and scattering them all over the yard.

MNsure: abolish it, or tweak it?

Allison O’Toole, CEO of the MNsure health insurance exchange program, was in Glencoe Thursday to encourage people to enroll or re-enroll, and to assure them that recent premium hikes will be offset by federal tax credits.
MNsure always has been a politically charged topic in Minnesota. It was born of the controversial Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, which itself was a political hot potato at the federal level.
