Things to expect from current, or new, city council

To the Editor:
Listed below are things that citizens of Glencoe should expect from their current or new city council:
• Council should allow citizens to participate in discussions in an open forum during the council meetings rather than being allowed to only make comments at the end of the meeting, after all voting has been completed.

Write-in votes will not cost taxpayers more money

To the Editor:
I met Dave Cotton on Saturday when door knocking on the northeast side of Hutchinson. When I asked him the source of his opinion letter on the cost of elections, he stated he didn’t have a source.
I shared with him information from Cindy Schultz Ford, McLeod County auditor-treasurer, who told me the following facts.
• There is no additional cost to the county with a write-in campaign.
• Every township and the city of Brownton have hand-counted ballots this year.

• City of Glencoe — Glencoe City Center, 1107 11th St. E, Suite 112.
• City of Biscay — Mail ballot.
• City of Brownton — Brownton Community Center, 310 Second St. N.

In its first full year of operation, the new campground at Oak Leaf Park netted $18,475, City Administrator Mark Larson reported to the city of Glencoe’s Finance Committee on Wednesday, Oct. 26.
Larson said he anticipates the campground will generate $25,000 in 2017.
The campground opened in the middle of the summer 2015 on a first-come, first-served basis. Starting in 2017, reservations will be on an online only system.

Jeffrey Scharpe announces write-in campaign for mayor

Jeffrey Scharpe on Monday announced a write-in campaign for Glencoe mayor.

“Let me start by apologizing for my late entry into the race for mayor,” Scharpe said. “It was a difficult decision to make and one that my wife and I had many conversations about. After many discussions with family and friends, I realized this was something I strongly believe in and want to do.”

Reconstruction of County Roads 15, 3 set for 2017

McLeod County is gearing up for an approximately $6 million reconstruction of County Road 3 between County Road 1 and the Carver County line, and County Road 15 from County Road 22 to Highway 7. Both are locared on the east side of the county.
County Highway Engineer John Brunkhorst told the County Board Tuesday that work has begun on acquiring right-of-way for the project. He said there are 54 parcels of property involved, and negotiations have begun on behalf of the county with property owners along the two roads.

Tigers end Panthers season again

The location, weather conditions and score were different, but the outcome was the same as Belle Plaine rallied to end Glencoe-Silver Lake’s season in the semifinals of the 2AAA football playoffs.
However, whereas the Tigers dominated the Panthers last October on a sunny day at Stevens Seminary Stadium, this year’s matchup was a back-and-forth war of attrition played under ever-increasing rainfall at the Belle Plaine Athletic Complex.

Spikers sweep in sectional opener

Playing its final game before the home crowd, the Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team claimed its 22nd victory of the season – against eight losses –by defeating Sibley East in a three-game sweep to win its Section 2AA Tournament opener on Friday, Oct. 29.
The Panthers had already defeated the Wolverines once this season, winning in three games at Sibley East on Sept. 6.
