Nagel’s out-of-state trips are costly, unnecessary

To the Editor:
At the Dec. 1 Truth in Taxation meeting, a full house of McLeod County taxpayers appealed to the county commissioners not to raise the tax levy for 2016. Residents explained how they are already struggling with increasing school levies and declining farm or wage incomes.

County Board calls for bids on jail project

McLeod County will know in February whether it has favorable bids for its proposed jail expansion and courthouse security project.
At its Tuesday morning meeting, the McLeod County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution calling for bids on the project.
Bids will be opened Thursday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m., and will be considered for award at the County Board’s meeting on Feb. 16 at 10 a.m.

New 4-H coordinator on board with county

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners met the new 4-H coordinator, Darcy Cole, at its meeting Tuesday morning.
Cole replaces Jill Grams, who resigned last year to take a teaching position with the Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart School District.
Cole said she spent 12 years as a 4-H’er in her native Acoma Township, involved in the sheep program and as a 4-H Ambassador.
She is a graduate of the Unviersity of Wisconsin - River Falls, where she received her ag educator and teaching degrees.

City Council makes annual appointments, designations

The city designated Security Bank and Trust Company as the depository of city funds and set council meetings for the first and third Mondays of each month at 7 p.m.
The Council also set fees for rental equipment and labor in 2016. City Administrator Mark Larson explained that most of the costs are the same, but reviewed the few changes.

Wright re-elected County Board chairman

Third District Commissioner Paul Wright was chosen by his fellow McLeod County Board members as the board chairman for 2016. This will be Wright’s fourth consecutive year as the chairman.
Commissioner Ron Shimanski, who represents the First District, was elected vice chair. Sheldon Nies was the vice chair in 2015.
The designations for chairman and vice chairman were both made unanimously by the County Board.

Minnesota Nice wraps up 2015 with over 200 packages

Over 200 soldiers had a better Christmas than they may have expected, thanks to Minnesota Nice, based here in Glencoe.
Linda Krueger, who along with Colleen Benjamin and LaDonna Stuber, heads up the local effort to provide packages for soldiers, said they packed 205 boxes this year, up about 40 from last year.
While the three do all the packaging and shipping, the local effort is mostly due to the generosity of organizations and individuals in the area.

Contemporary Dental joins in ‘Give Kids a Smile’ effort

Dr. Knorr of Contemporary Dental, Glencoe, is joining with dental professionals across the state to provide free care to children whose families cannot afford to pay for their dental care. The service day is known as Give Kids a Smile, and will be held at the Contemporary Dental office on Feb. 5. The office of Contemporary Dental is located at 1015 Greeley Ave., Glencoe. Anyone with questions, or who are interested in scheduling an appointment for Feb. 5, may call the dental office at 320-864-3129.

Proof of insurance required for tabs

Minnesotans who are registering, renewing license tabs or transferring ownership of motor vehicles and motorcycles will need to provide insurance information under a law change that took effect on Jan. 1.
The Minnesota Legislature changed state law last session to require insurance information for vehicle registration. Prior to the change, the law required owners to attest that the motor vehicle or motorcycle was covered by an insurance policy during the registration process; the specific policy information was not required.
