Gary R. Johnson, 67, of Brownton

Gary R. Johnson, 67, of Brownton, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016, at his home.
A memorial service was held Friday, Feb. 26, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart with the Rev. Mahlon Bekedam officiating. Music was provided by Adline Kottke, organist, and Christian Nielsen, soloist. The eulogy was delivered by Diane Lawson.

Lorraine Holtberg-Twit, 86, Silver Lake

Lorraine Mavis Holtberg-Twit, 86, of Silver Lake, formerly of Cold Spring, Paynesville and Belgrade, died peacefully Feb. 25, 2016, at Glencoe Regional Health Services, surrounded by the love of her family and with her granddaughter Jill Klassen at her side.
 

Delores Haus, 91, of Arlington

Delores Haus, 91, of Arlington, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at the Arlington Good Samaritan Center.
 
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 3, at 2 p.m., at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Arlington. Visitation will be at the church Thursday from noon until the time of the service.
 

Joél Gomez-Avila, 21, of Buffalo Lake

Joél Alejandro Gomez-Avila, 21, of Buffalo Lake, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia.
 
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Feb. 26, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hector, with the Revs. Mark Mallak and Anthony Stubeda officiating. Music was provided by Cyndi Washburn as an accompanist, Don Clasemann as soloist and the Jubilate Choir. Interment followed in the Buffalo Lake City Cemetery.
 

Nathalie Carlson, 83, of Cold Spring

Nathalie M. “Lee” Carlson, 83, of Cold Spring, died peacefully Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta.
 
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 27, at Abounding Joy Lutheran Church, St. Cloud.
 

County makes right decision on jail

On a 4-1 vote at its Feb. 16 meeting, the McLeod County Board of Commissioners approved construction bids for its proposed jail expansion and courthouse security project.
We well remember that in 2007, the then County Board made a last-minute decision to scrap a proposed $23 million project that would have added 60 beds to the jail.

The opioid epidemic: enough is enough

We have a crisis in our country. A crisis that claims more lives than car crashes. A crisis that rips apart families of all different backgrounds. Killing 28,648 Americans in 2014, this crisis is prescription drug and heroin abuse. And with deaths increasing nearly sixfold since 2000, it is a crisis on the rise.

Fantasy sports betting should be illegal in state

My name is Anna and I am a seventh grader in Minnesota. I was asked to write to a newspaper in Minnesota about my opinion on fantasy sports betting and inform them about the Atkins Bill. I am worried about how fantasy sports betting and other forms of online gambling are affecting the citizens of Minnesota.

Watershed board approves permit for school project

The Buffalo Creek Watershed Board approved a permit for the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District and continued to discuss one for the city at its regular meeting Tuesday, Feb. 23.
After a meeting between the city of Glencoe’s Short Elliot Hendrickson (SEH) Engineer Justin Black, the school district’s engineer David Rey of Anderson Johnson and the Buffalo Creek Watershed Engineer Chris Otterness talked about a combined permit from the city and school for the Northeast Drainage project, Otterness recommended the city and school permits be considered separately.

City officials talk LGA with state reps

Officials from cities in the local area gathered in Hutchinson Monday for a meeting with Reps. Dean Urdahl and Glenn Gruenhagen on the Local Government Aid (LGA)  hosted by the City of Hutchinson and the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities (CGMC).
Glencoe, Stewart, Hutchinson, Arlington, Gaylord, Lester Prairie, Winsted, Winthrop, Biscay, Litchfield and Kingston were all represented.
CGMC Lobbyist Marty Seifert opened the meeting by presenting the coalition’s legislative priorities, which includes restoring LGA to previous funding levels as number one.
