George H. Lhotka, 74, of Silver Lake

George Henry Lhotka, 74, of Silver Lake, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at Yuma Regional Health Center in Yuma, Arizona.
 
A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, March 7, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake with the Revs. Tony Stubeda and Paul Schumacher as the concelebrants.
 
George Henry Lhotka was born Jan. 22, 1942, in Silver Lake, the son of George and Mary (Wosmek) Lhotka.
 

Betty Ann Heuer, 71, of Litchfield

Betty Ann Heuer, 71, of Litchfield, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, at her home.
 
Memorial services were held Saturday, March 5, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato. The Rev. David Markworth officiated. Yvonne Schuette was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Rock of Ages,” “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less” and “Just As I Am, Without One Plea.”
 

Soup packaging

Hannah Graf, Hunter Schmitt and Eli Ehrke were all smiles as they added spices to bean soup mixes at a soup packing event for the McLeod Emergency Food Shelf Friday, March 4, at the Glencoe City Center. The event was sponsored by Christ Lutheran Church, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and Thrivent Financial. The group packed nearly 1,300 bags, over 500 pounds, of soup to be donated to the food shelf as part of the 34th annual Minnesota Food Share Campaign in the month of March. All donations in the month of March are matched pound for pound and dollar for dollar.

Armstrong bid comes in under estimate

The Glencoe City Council accepted a bid for construction services for the Armstrong Avenue project at its regular meeting Monday night.
The low bid came from R&R Excavating of Hutchinson for a total of about $3.52 million.
Short Elliot Hendrickson (SEH) Engineer Justin Black said the bidding was very competitive with six offers on the table ranging from R&R Excavating’s $3.52 million to $4.3 million.
The accepted bid was lower than the engineer’s estimate of $4.3 million.

Merrill A. Gehrke, 92, of Brownton

Merrill A. Gehrke, 92, of Brownton, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care in Glencoe.
 
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 2, at Grace Lutheran Church in Brownton with the Rev. Andrew Hermodson-Olsen officiating. Bonnie Westmiller was the organist. Andrew and Rosine Hermodson-Olsen sang “How Great Thou Art.” Congregational hymns were “Softly and Tenderly” and “Amazing Grace.”
 

County Board needs new meeting spot

The McLeod County Sheriff’s Office will be moving its administrative staff into the County Board meeting room March 25, which means the board will need to find a new meeting spot.
The sheriff’s office will be utilizing the meeting room throughout its jail expansion and security project, which could last up to a year and a half.
On Tuesday, March 8, the County Board agreed to hold the majority of its meetings during this time in the City Council Chambers at the Glencoe City Center.

McLeod County businesses have new option for energy improvements to buildings

A new opportunity to increase energy efficiency is now available to McLeod County businesses.
The McLeod County Board of Commissioners entered into the PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) program at its Tuesday, March 1 meeting.
Peter Lindstrom, local government outreach coordinator from the University of Minnesota, said PACE allows commercial, industrial, nonprofit and multi-housing property owners to take on energy efficiency improvements, and to pay them back through property tax assessments with the savings in energy costs.

City personnel committee hears request to use city room, update on NE drainage

The city of Glencoe’s personnel and legislative committee heard a request from Common Cup to use one of the City Center’s rooms at its regular meeting Wednesday afternoon.
Common Cup, founded in 2001, is an organization of area churches that work to serve those in need in the community. The group does backpack food distribution to ensure kids in need have food on weekends, diaper distributions, food and gas vouchers and more.

Historical society antique appraisals set for March 20

The McLeod County Historical Society will host its annual antique appraisal fundraiser Sunday, March 20, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the McLeod County Historical Museum, 380 School Rd. NW, Hutchinson.
Assisting in the appraisals will be Glen Kashuba, a local coin buyer and collector, who brings expertise in U.S. and foreign coins, tokens, sports memorabilia, celebrities’ autographs, post cards, movie posters, toys and more; and Lynn Buck, who specializes in quilts, textiles, china, glass, flatware, jewelry and housewares.

Chamber, Woida part ways

Barbara Woida is no longer associated with the Glencoe Area Chamber of Commerce, its board of directors announced in a brief email Friday. No other details were given.
Woida was the chamber president for about a year. The board of directors announced that it is beginning to recruit a replacement.
