Council approves new policy, Mike Drew retirement request

The Glencoe City Council created a new policy for dealing with unique retirement situations and used it to review a retirement request from Public Works Director Mike Drew.
The new policy states that if an employee reaches the required 85 year combination of years of service and age but is somehow ineligible for extended benefits that would otherwise be available, the City Council will review the case on an individual basis. The Council will consider merit and long-term savings due to the retirement.

Caucuses or primary elections?

Tuesday, March 1, caucus day in Minnesota, was barely over before calls were made to abandon the caucus system and establish presidential primary elections to choose party candidates for president.
That happens every four years after party caucuses, but this year has a twist. Typically, critics have called for the abolishment of caucuses because of low voter turnouts. This year, it’s because so many turned out that they were standing in line, waiting to get into their local caucus.

Band, choir students represented GSL well on trip

To the Editor:
Recently, we had the pleasure of traveling to Memphis and New Orleans with 92 Glencoe-Silver Lake musicians and 11 adults as part of the GSL music trip.

John Kasich may be GOP’s best hope

The headline in a recent British tabloid said it all about the current state of the American presidential campaigning. With a large, full-page photo of Donald Trump, the large headline stated: “Really?”
It sums up a lot of opinions here and abroad.
As the GOP regulars scramble to slow him down, Trump simply lets fly with the latest insults and taunts at his fellow Republican hopefuls. Reality TV at its nastiest. It looks like a bunch of 12-year-olds on the playground flinging juvenile insults at each other.

Newman previews new session

By State Rep.

The legislative session began Tuesday, March 8. This session is scheduled to be much shorter than usual, so the next 10 weeks will be quite a whirlwind. Although it is a bonding year, there are other issues that I believe to be top priorities as well. Below is a list and brief summary of those issues.

To find hope, look around you

Cruz, Sanders favored at county caucuses

March 1 party caucuses in McLeod County had some of the highest turnouts in a quarter century, a trend that was reflected throughout the state with contentious presidential sparring in both major political parties.
The caucuses allowed party participants to not only hear and debate issues of the day, but cast their preferences for presidential candidates.
Minnesota Republicans split with the national trend of supporting Donald Trump as the Republican candidate for presidential. Minnesotan GOP’ers prefer candidate Marco Rubio (40,375) votes.

Prehns helping make the world a better place

As he has done since 2000, Glencoe-Silver Lake assistant girls’ basketball coach took some time out of his duties with the Panthers in February to help serve a higher purpose in the Dominican Republic.

Prehn, who on this trip was joined for the third time by daughter Gina Prehn, not only put his skills to use building a mission house, but also put his coaching acumen to use by helping conduct basketball camps for Dominican youth.

“We get more out of the trip than the people we are helping,” Dave Prehn said.

Panthers' season ends in heartbreaking fashion

Despite the deck seemingly being stacked against the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team in a Section 2AA North subsection semifinal against St. Peter on Thursday, March 3, the Panthers put together their most valiant effort of the season.

Unfortunately for GSL, the mighty endeavor did not lead to victory.
