Melba L. Griebie, 98, of Hutchinson

Melba L. Griebie, 98, of Hutchinson, died Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
 
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12, at New Journey United Church of Christ in Hutchinson, with the Rev. Jill Warner officiating. Sharon Barton was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Fairest Lord Jesus,” “This is My Father’s World” and “On Eagle’s Wings.”
 

Zickmond Chrast, 90, of Silver Lake

Zickmond Edward Chrast, 90, of Silver Lake, died Tuesday, March 8, 2016, surrounded by his loving family, at Hutchinson Health.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, March 11, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake. The Rev. Paul Schumacher was the celebrant.
 
Casket bearers were his grandsons, Matthew and Andrew Chrast, Nicholas, Jacob and Luke Weiers, Justin, Craig and Travis Scheffler and David Johnsen.
 

Lee Bullert, 69, of Cottage Grove

Lee (Rosalie) Bullert (nee Rennells), 69, of Cottage Grove, died peacefully on March 12, 2016, at Cerenity-Marian Care Center in St. Paul.
The funeral service will be Sunday, March 20, at 2 p.m., at All Saints Lutheran Church 8100 Belden Blvd., Cottage Grove.
 

Ober, SDSU are going dancing in NCAA tourney

Glencoe-Silver Lake alumna Clarissa Ober is going dancing this weekend in California, along with her South Dakota State University (SDSU) women’s basketball teammates.
On Monday, March 14, the Jackrabbits were awarded the No. 12 seed in the Lexington Region of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship tournament after a 26-6 regular season.
SDSU will face fifth-seeded Miami in an opening-round game on Saturday, March 19 at the Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto, California. 

GSL youth grapplers compete in district qualifier

Over 200 youth wrestlers from kindergarten through eighth-grade hit the mat for the Glencoe-Silver Lake/ Lester Prairie Youth Wrestling Tournament at Lester Prairie High School on Saturday, March 12.
The competition was a district qualifier for the Northland Youth Wrestling Association’s Region 3 Tournament, scheduled to be held at Lakeville North High School on Saturday, March 19.

GKC competes at Hutch tournament

Eleven members of the Glencoe Karate Club (GKC) competed in a tournament hosted by the Hutchinson Shotokan Karate Club at the Hutchinson Event Center on Saturday, March 12. 
Among the placing GKC competitors were: 
Addison Adams – first in Kihon, second in Ribbon Kumite.
Luke Becker – first in Ribbon Kumite, second in Kihon.
Abygail Smith – second in Ribbon Kumite, fourth in Kihon.

Girl to Pequot Lakes couple

Ryan and Deb Schlueter of Pequot Lakes announce the birth of their daughter, Josephine Marie, born March 2, 2016, at St. Joseph Hospital in Brainerd. Josephine weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces ,and was 20 inches long. Grandparents are Stan and Kathy Schlueter of Glencoe and Larry and Peggy Nelson of Grand Rapids. 

Becker places in DECA

Laura Becker of Brownton was among 12 marketing management and 10 culinary arts students sent by South Central College, Mankato, to the Minnesota State Collegiate DECA Career Development Conference Feb. 18-19. Becker and partner Nate Qualley of Nicollet placed third in the advertising campaign category. Becker also placed in the top eight in the professional sales category.

St. Cloud academic honors

Jacob Klima of Silver Lake was named to St. Cloud Technical and Community College’s president’s list. To qualify, students must earn a 4.0 grade point average (GPA). Mitchell Kurth and Benjamin Maiers of Stewart were named to the college’s dean’s list. To earn a spot on the dean’s list students must maintain at GPA of 3.5 to 3.9. 

Kindergarten showcase
