Boys’ golfers play at Rockford meet

The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ golf team carded a score of 194 in a Wright County Conference West matchup hosted by Rockford on Thursday, April 21. 
Dylan Schuth led the Panthers with a score of 46 over nine holes on a seasonal day at Shamrock Golf Course. Mitchell Beneke scored a 48, with Christian Higgins posting a 49 and Jayden Lachermeier a 51 to account for the team scoring. Nicholas Schmidt and Joseph Torgerson also competed, carding scores of 55 and 69, respectively.

Girls’ golfers take 4th, 5th in meets

With three circuit meets in the book, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ golf team is holding onto fourth place in the Wright County Conference West standings following competitions hosted by Dassel-Cokato and Litchfield last week.
Jenna Lokensgard led the Panthers with a score of 47 over nine holes at Albion Ridges Golf Course in Annandale on Tuesday, April 19, which placed her ninth overall in the Charger-hosted meet. 

GSL softball falls below .500

Last week was a rough one for the Glencoe-Silver Lake softball team. The Panthers, who began their season with a 3-1 record, fell below the .500 mark with three consecutive losses at home against Wright County Conference rivals to enter this week with a 3-4 mark.

Bruns lose to St. Croix Falls

The Brownton Bruins lost 14-4 to St. Croix Falls Saturday afternoon in an exhibition game, their second of the new season.
The Bruins rotated five pitchers through eight innings of play to give some arm time to each before the Crow River Valley League season opens Sunday, May 1. Dylan McCormick started and threw three innings, followed by Ryan Grams, two innings; Joe Ahlers, an inning; Reggie Vacek, 12⁄3 innings; and Jeff Wendlandt, who closed out the top of the eighth.

Good week for Panther track and field squads

The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ and girls’ track and field teams got in their share of competition over the past week, also finding their share of success in meets are Watertown-Mayer and Foley.
The GSL girls earned their first victory of the season, doing so in resounding manner by scoring 200 points in a Wright County Conference quadrangular hosted by Watertown-Mayer on Tuesday, April 19.

Brewers win season opener

With a performance that matched the conditions, the Glencoe Brewers baseball team claimed a season-opening victory under sunny skies by topping the Montrose Stingers 9-2 at Vollmer Field on Saturday, April 23.
The Brewers rallied from a 1-0 deficit with a six-run fifth inning en route to the triumph, also scoring a lone run in the sixth inning and two more in the eighth inning. 

Panthers up record to 6-0 with two-win week

A perfect start to the season was run to 6-0 as the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team won both of its Wright County Conference West matchups last week. On the road for both games, the Panthers won 8-6 at Mound Westonka on Tuesday, April 19, and 9-1 at Annandale on Friday, April 22.
Mitch Pinske went 4-1/3 innings for the win in the victory against the White Hawks. Pinske struck out five batters while walking four and allowing nine hits and five earned runs.

SL City Council hires new full-time police officer

The Silver Lake City Council has spent the better part of the past year searching for either a police chief or officer. 
 
The process came closer to an end on Monday, April 18, when the council interviewed and offered the full-time officer position to Kyle Jorgensen.
 
Jorgensen, a Maple Grove native, accepted the position at $17.04 per hour, pending positive results of all background checks.
 

Area students earn honors

Several area students were recently inducted into the Ridgewater College Phi Theta Kappa honor society for the 2015-2016 academic year. Austin Maynard and Thomas Hedin of Glencoe, Carl Nolan and Cassandra Nosbush of Stewart, Kaitlyn Bohning of Silver Lake and Mackenzie Schmidt of Brownton all earned the honor. Induction ceremonies were held at the Hutchinson Campus on March 16 and the Willmar Campus on March 21.

Noel Lawrence Phifer, 90, of Glencoe, died Monday, April 11, 2016, at his home.
