Bruins at 4-1 with win over Hamburg

Plato blasts St. Boni

It was a one-game weekend for the Plato Blue Jays, and they made it count.

Plato rocked visiting St. Boni 12-0 on Sunday, May 15, scoring in five of its six turns at the plate before the game was called.

The Blue Jays put up seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, giving starting pitcher Adam Prehn far more offense than he would need in the contest. Prehn was dominant, allowing just two hits and one walk in seven innings while striking out six batters.

Brewers fall at Green Isle

The Glencoe Brewers suffered their second loss of the season in a 4-1 setback at Green Isle on Sunday, May 15. The loss dropped Glencoe to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in Crow River Valley League play.

Green Isle put up two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to take a 4-0 lead before Mason Goettl hit a solo home run in the seventh to account for all of the Brewers’ scoring on the day.

Track and Field tams compete at True Team meet

The Glencoe-Silver Lake track and field teams competed in the Section 6AA True Team meet on Tuesday, May 10, with the boys finishing fourth and the girls taking seventh.

The Panther boys accumulated 437.5 points overall to share fourth place with Hutchinson. Mound-Westonka was third with 447.5 points, while Annandale took sixth with 433.5. Willmar ran away with the meet title, posting 657 points.

Girls' golf hanging onto fifth in conference race

With the Wright County West Conference championship meets looming, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ golf team bookended last week with a pair of competitions.

The Panthers took part in their final nine-hole conference meet of the season on Friday, May 13, at Shamrock Golf Course in Delano. Led by Lindsay Wedin’s eighth-place score of 50, GSL took sixth overall with a team score of 238.

Rachel Reichow was 26th with a 60, with Jenna Lokensgood in 33rd with a 62 and Jordan Rolf in 36th with a 66.

Softball enters postseason this week

The second season has arrived for the Glencoe-Silver Lake softball team as the Panthers begin Section 5AA Tournament competition at home on Friday.

GSL snared the No. 4 seed in its 5AA East subsectional bracket and hosts Holy Family Catholic at 2:30 Friday afternoon in what will be the Panthers’ final home game of the season.

GSL lost 4-2 to Holy Family on Monday, May 2, in the lone regular-season meeting between the teams.

Boys' golf nearing end of regular season

It was a busy stretch for the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ golf team as the Panthers competed in three meets over seven days, culminating in the first of two Wright County Conference West 18-hole meets on Monday, May 16.

Statistics from that meet were not available as the Chronicle went to press.

GSL also competed in a pair of conference meets last week, carding a 192 in a meet hosted by New London-Spicer on Tuesday, May 10 and a 190 at Litchfield two days later.

Panthers clinch second-straight WCC West title

By running its winning streak to nine games, the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team also clinched the Wright County Conference West title as the Panthers prepare for the final week of the regular season.

“Back-to-back years,” coach Dean Schwirtz said. “It’s fun for the kids.”

GSL won two of its last three games by shut out, sandwiching a 4-3 non-conference defeat of Norwood Young America on Friday, May 13, with a 15-0 blanking of Mound Westonka on Tuesday, May 10, and a 4-0 victory at Rockford on Monday, May 16.

School Board OKs hiring of 2 teachers for STEM initiative

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board approved the request to hire two full-time teachers to be lead teachers for the district’s new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiative with the company Project Lead the Way.
 
The two new positions will begin the 2016-2017 school year and will work at the elementary level to provide support and instruction for the implementation of STEM. 
 

Candidacy filings open Tuesday for federal, state, county offices

Filings for candidacy open Tuesday, May 17, for a variety of state and county offices, including three commissioner districts in McLeod County.
 
Up for election on Nov. 8 are the commissioner seats in District 1, 3 and 4.
 
Ron Shimanski of Silver Lake is currently the District 1 commissioner. District 1 includes the cities of Silver Lake, Lester Prairie and Winsted, and the townships of Bergen, Hale and Winsted.
