Awards, scholarships presented at GSL senior night

Glencoe-Silver Lake High School hosted its annual senior award night on Sunday, May 8. Over 100 scholarships totaling about $144,000 were awarded to GSL seniors. The night also included a banquet hosted by the booster club.
 
Special awards were also presented for fine arts and athletics.

GSL school board hears level three staff grievance

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board held a hearing Monday night for a staff grievance filed by Education Minnesota: GSL that is now at a level three. The hearing was part of the board’s regular monthly meeting.
 
GSL High School social studies teacher Brea Wiblemo addressed the board with her case. She said she had been contracted for second and third trimester overloads. Due to her maternity leave, she said her third trimester overload was removed. 
 

Body cams: A useful tool, if used wisely

Law enforcement officials across the state are anxiously watching the state Legislature’s attempt to craft guidelines for the use of body cams by law enforcement officials.
 
There is no doubt that body cams can be a useful tool. Video captures reality, and it could help prevent the often befuddling he-said, she-said testimonies that create headaches for judges and juries.
 

Governing woes not all the pols’ fault

We may not know who our next president is going to be, but here’s one thing that’s almost certain: he or she will take office with roughly half of the electorate unhappy and mistrustful. The notion that the President speaks for a broad coalition of Americans who are willing to set aside their differences on behalf of a compelling new vision for the country? It’s vanished.
 

Brownton City looks at sludge disposal

The city of Brownton is trying to figure out what to do with the sludge that accumulates at its wastewater treatment plant.
 
John Rodeberg, an engineer with Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH) talked about some possible solutions at the City Council’s May 3 meeting.
 

Stewart receives favorable bid for proposed improvement project

The city of Stewart has received a very favorable bid for a proposed street and utility improvement project, the City Council heard at its Monday night meeting.
 
Andy Kehren of Bolton & Menk, the city’s engineering consultant, said the apparent low bid is $2.73 million from LaTour Construction of Maple Lake, which is about 6 percent less than the engineer’s estimate of $2.89 million.
 

Binnebose graduates from Chadron State

Kristina Binnebose of Brownton earned a Bachelor of Arts degree during Chadron State College’s spring commencement on May 7. She was also honored during the traditional Ivy Day ceremony on May 6. The ceremony honors graduating students who have distinguished themselves through academics, athletics, service and extracurricular activities. 

Irene Ida Beinke, 96, of Fairmont

Irene I. Beinke, 96, of Fairmont, formerly of Minnetonka, died Thursday, May 5, at her home.
 
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 14, at 11 a.m., at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to the time of the service at the church. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery.
 

Geraldine M. Wraspir, 70, of Ottertail

Geraldine “Geri” Marie Wraspir, 70, of Ottertail, died Nov. 26, 2015.
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, June 3, at 10:30 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church in Silver Lake.
 

Clarence Scharpe, 91, of Arlington

Clarence Scharpe entered eternal rest Friday, May 6, 2016, at the Arlington Good Samaritan Center at the age of 91 years, 10 months and 27 days.
 
The funeral service was held Tuesday, May 10, at Zion Lutheran Church in Arlington. The Rev. Deborah Dawson officiated. Interment was in the Glencoe City Cemetery in Glencoe.
