Roberta J. Copler, 58, of Rochester

Roberta “Robbie” Jean Copler, 58, of Rochester, passed away peacefully with family by her side at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester on Monday, June 6, 2016.
A private family service is planned.

Lola Beneke, 94, of Parker, Arizona

Lola Ida Mathilda (Alsleben) Beneke, 94, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016. She passed away peacefully at her son’s home in Parker, Arizona, while surrounded by family.
Mrs. Beneke had two goals in life: one was to serve, and the other was to meet her savior, Jesus Christ. She did both with grace and dignity.

Brownton loses twice

The Brownton Bruins suffered two losses in their two most recent games.

The Bruins hosted the Green Isle Irish Wednesday, June 8, with the Irish defeating their hosts 7-1 in a Crow River Valley League (CRVL) game.

The two teams battled through four scoreless innings before Brownton put the first run on the scoreboard in the fifth on an RBI single by Seth Schuette.

The Irish knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth, and went ahead 2-1 with a run in the seventh. Green Isle rallied for five runs in the eighth to ice the win.

Plato improves to 9-3

There was no need for nailbiting last week as the Plato Blue Jays bested a pair of Crow River Valley League (CRVL) competitors by a combined score of 32-0 to improve to 9-3 on the season.
The Blue Jays, who enter this week on a five-game winning streak, recorded their third shutout victory of the season in an 11-0 defeat of host Cologne on Tuesday, June 7. 

Brewers take two of three

After suffering a rough loss at Hutchinson to start off last week, the Glencoe Brewers bounced back to claim a pair of close wins over Crow River Valley League (CRVL) opponents to remain smack dab in the middle of the West Division standings.

Not a lot went right for Glencoe in a 15-0 non-league loss at Hutchinson on Wednesday, June 8, as the Brewers committed four errors while accumulating just two hits against their neighbors to the northwest.

Monahan seventh at state meet

Glencoe-Silver Lake’s Maddie Monahan wrapped up her junior year by placing seventh in the 300-meter hurdles at the Class A state track and field meet on Saturday, June 11, at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Monahan finished the final race in a time of 46.51 seconds as temperatures hovered around 90 degrees Saturday evening. In the preliminary round, she waited out a 90-minute weather delay to run a time of 46.97, which seeded her ninth for the finals.

Glencoe wins Montevideo VFW Tournament

With five wins in its first five games, the Glencoe VFW Post 5102 baseball team has begun its season in fine form.

Not even a full week into its season, 5102 has already claimed a bit of hardware by winning the Montevideo Tournament on Saturday, June 11.

Glencoe topped Morris 11-2 and bested tourney host Montevideo 13-1 to earn the championship trophy.

Starting pitcher Carsen Streich tossed all seven innings against Morris, striking out 14 batters, while walking two with five hits and two unearned runs allowed.
