Food Shelf needs our help, so it can help

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners is used to hearing appeals from a wide variety of non-profits and other organizations. Each year, as it goes through its budget process, the County Board sifts through those requests and, if it makes an appropriation, tries to balance that with the day-to-day needs of the county.
Tuesday morning, for the first time in recent history, the McLeod Emergency Food Shelf approached the board for help, asking for a $44,000 appropriation to help it meet its operating costs in 2017.

Why he’s running for 3rd District commissioner

To the Editor:
I grew up in Victoria. I was discharged from the Marines and my wife and I searched for a place we could settle down. Since I run a small business, I was looking for a more rural area. We also wanted to be near shopping, hospitals, recreational opportunities in a safe community with that “small town” feel we both grew up with. We came here on a whim, immediately fell in love and have been extremely happy with our decision to move.

Capturing memories in wood

From the train that passed his house each day as a child to the wagon and tractors he drove as an adult on his own farm, the equipment of Richard Swift’s memory has come back to life in his woodworking creations. Each piece is based on something he’s seen, used or experienced, a story tied to each one.
All 30-plus pieces of Swift’s collection are currently on display at Orchard Estates where Swift, 91, lives. The collection is a compilation of 25 years worth of woodworking.
