Primary election, candidate filings

The turnout for primary elections in Minnesota is noticeably low, hovering around the mark of 10 percent of registered voters heading toward the polls.
Were it not for our local races, the ballot in McLeod County would be remarkably bland, with just a race for a Republican candidate for U.S. Congressional District 7 in Minnesota, and another for a Supreme Court associate justice.

Wick has vision; is backed by Republican party

To the Editor:
When I attended the candidate forum last week in Hutchinson, I could hear the excitement in Brad Wick’s voice as he shared his plans for the future of this county. Brad wants to build on the foundation of our many assets, he sees so much more potential for McLeod County. Brad wants McLeod County to be the envy of Minnesota, he wants other counties to desire to emulate what we are doing here.

Willing to take on responsibility as commissioner

To the Editor:
Being a county commissioner is a big responsibility. After many words of encouragement, and much thought, I decided to run for this office for the people of District 4 in McLeod County.

Jail project is just another disappointment

To the Editor:
I fought hard in stopping the $22 million jail project (originally $25 million) and tried unsuccessfully against the $7 million remodeling project.
It just did not seem to make sense in spending millions on tearing down what looks like nearly one-third or more of, hopefully, a well-planned addition built in the 1970s by our previous commissioners. When this brick structure addition was built, many called it Glencoe’s Holiday Inn.

Glencoe blood drive collected 124 units

To the Editor:
Many thanks to all the faithful donors who donated at the Glencoe Community Blood Drive on Wednesday, July 27 — especially those who braved the downpours to enter the building during the afternoon.

City of Glencoe not expecting to raise levy for 2017 budget

Right now, the city of Glencoe isn’t planning a levy increase for 2017, according to City Administrator Mark Larson.
The mayor and City Council met last Wednesday, July 27, as the city’s finance committee.
Larson did note, while presenting a preliminary 2017 budget, that he does not yet have figures for bond payments on city projects. Larson said the city is still waiting for information from the county and its bond counsel.
“But right now, we’re not anticipating any levy increase,” Larson said.

Pola-Czesky Days open Friday night

Silver Lake is planning another three days of fun-filled events as its annual Pola-Czesky Days celebration opens Friday, Aug. 5. This is the 47th year of the celebration.
Friday evening activities include the start of the kickball tournament and the popular toilet bowl races. Both start at 7 p.m. The kickball tournament is at the softball field, and the toilet bowl races are held on Main Street near the auditorium. A street dance featuring Menace will follow the toilet bowl races.

County considering new positions at Solid Waste

The McLeod County Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC), which is comprised of the five McLeod County commissioners, considered a short-term plan to restructure the solid waste department with two additional full-time employees. SWAC met Wednesday morning, July 27.
Pat Melvin, county administrator, said the restructuring of the solid waste department is actually part of a long-term plan to place solid waste, environmental services and the planning and zoning department all under the same umbrella.

Primary election set Aug. 9

The Tuesday, Aug. 9, primary election will pare down the field of candidates for McLeod County commissioner in Districts 3 and 4.
Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. that day.
Each district has three candidates, and the primary election will determine the final two candidates in each district. Those candidates will appear on the Nov. 8 general election ballot.

McLeod County, city of Hutchinson consider joint purchase of grinder

The joint purchase of a material grinder with the city of Hutchinson could help McLeod County on its way to becoming a processing center for agricultural plastic, boat wrap and other plastic materials.
The McLeod County Solid Waste Advisory Committee, which consists of the five county commissioners, met Wednesday morning, July 27, and heard that the county has been awarded a $600,000 facilities capital assistance program (CAP) grant from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) to help it develop an auxiliary building and purchase equipment for processing the plastic.
