City of Glencoe not expecting to raise levy for 2017 budget

Right now, the city of Glencoe isn’t planning a levy increase for 2017, according to City Administrator Mark Larson.
The mayor and City Council met last Wednesday, July 27, as the city’s finance committee.
Larson did note, while presenting a preliminary 2017 budget, that he does not yet have figures for bond payments on city projects. Larson said the city is still waiting for information from the county and its bond counsel.
“But right now, we’re not anticipating any levy increase,” Larson said.

Pola-Czesky Days open Friday night

Silver Lake is planning another three days of fun-filled events as its annual Pola-Czesky Days celebration opens Friday, Aug. 5. This is the 47th year of the celebration.
Friday evening activities include the start of the kickball tournament and the popular toilet bowl races. Both start at 7 p.m. The kickball tournament is at the softball field, and the toilet bowl races are held on Main Street near the auditorium. A street dance featuring Menace will follow the toilet bowl races.

County considering new positions at Solid Waste

The McLeod County Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC), which is comprised of the five McLeod County commissioners, considered a short-term plan to restructure the solid waste department with two additional full-time employees. SWAC met Wednesday morning, July 27.
Pat Melvin, county administrator, said the restructuring of the solid waste department is actually part of a long-term plan to place solid waste, environmental services and the planning and zoning department all under the same umbrella.

Primary election set Aug. 9

The Tuesday, Aug. 9, primary election will pare down the field of candidates for McLeod County commissioner in Districts 3 and 4.
Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. that day.
Each district has three candidates, and the primary election will determine the final two candidates in each district. Those candidates will appear on the Nov. 8 general election ballot.

McLeod County, city of Hutchinson consider joint purchase of grinder

The joint purchase of a material grinder with the city of Hutchinson could help McLeod County on its way to becoming a processing center for agricultural plastic, boat wrap and other plastic materials.
The McLeod County Solid Waste Advisory Committee, which consists of the five county commissioners, met Wednesday morning, July 27, and heard that the county has been awarded a $600,000 facilities capital assistance program (CAP) grant from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) to help it develop an auxiliary building and purchase equipment for processing the plastic.

County considering ending ATHC solid waste program

McLeod County is putting the Adult Training and Habilitation Center (ATHC) on a 30-day notice that financial improvements need to be made at a Watertown solid waste processing facility.
Meeting as the Solid Waste Advisory Committee, McLeod County commissioners heard last Wednesday that the Watertown facility is operating at a $26,000 loss.

Relay For Life set Friday in Hutchinson

The 23rd annual Relay For Life of McLeod County is set for Friday, Aug. 5, at Masonic West River Park in Hutchinson.
Luminary bags will be set on the walking paths at 9 a.m. At 3 p.m., a silent auction, reflection tent, survivor sanctuary and care giver circle all open. All Relay activities and campsites will open to the public.
Survivors’ registration is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Team photos start at 5 p.m., as does music by The BASICS. The survivors’ photo will be taken at 6:15 p.m.

Two injured in separate accidents

A driver and a bicyclist were injured in separate accidents on Highway 7 near or in Hutchinson last week, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
On Wednesday, July 27, at about 11 a.m., a two-vehicle accident was reported on Highway 7 near Yacht Avenue, just west of Hutchinson.
According to the state patrol, a 2010 Lincoln MKX driven by Grace Cerulla, 60, of Cosmos, was westbound on Highway 7 when it crossed the centerline and sideswiped an eastbound 2015 Ford Edge driven by Larry Venenga, 69, of Urbandale, Iowa.

Glencoe City yCouncil hires new employees

The Glencoe City Council hired Joshua Odden and Nicholas Larson as public works and parks department employees at its meeting  Monday, Aug. 1.
One position replaces James Voigt, who was promoted to public works director. The second position was created using municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) funds.
Public Works Director Mike Drew reported the city received 14 applications. Of the applications, six were selected for interviews. Drew and James Voigt handled the hiring process.

Wilkens family donates $9,400 to veterans fund

Fundraising efforts by the Ray Wilkens family continue to have a significant impact on local veteran programs in McLeod County.
Recently, the Wilkens family held a second memorial golf scramble in their father’s memory, and family members Chad Wilkens, Jen Heuer and Bryan Wilkens presented a check for $9,400 to McLeod County Veterans Association Chairman Ron Yurek. Total donations over the past two years are over $20,000.
